25 November
This performance by the Llewlyn Chetty Syndicate at The Jazzy Rainbow is part of the Concerts SA Venue Circuit which aims to foster a love and support for live music in our communities, as well as anchor small and medium sized venues in urban and rural Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.
Durban’s longest-running jazz lounge, The Jazzy Rainbow, in association with Concerts Sa, launched its first straight jazz programme on the eve of Heritage Day in September and is following up with this concert. “#JazzyStraightAhead is about introducing regular, live, straight jazz concerts to our city in order to help keep the music alive,” says Oliver-Rene Haas. “
Llewleyn Chetty is a former student of the UKZN School of music and is currently becoming one of Durban’s most sought after session musicians. He has many theatre productions and shows under his belt and has worked with numerous artists and bands both nationally and internationally. He has also performed with many local bands and artists such as, Natalie Rungan, Burton Naidoo, Neil Gonsalves, SAMA nominees Heels Over Head, Melvyn Peters, Dane Francis, Martin Sigamoney, Jae and Liana Barciela, just to name a few. Some of his influences are the legendary bass players Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten and John Patitucci.
The 25th of November promises to be a great night with The Llewelyn Chetty Syndicate, which blends jazz, pop and afro beats, bringing to life their own take on fusion. The bands repertoire is made up of some well-known straight ahead jazz standards and beautifully constructed compositions by band leader Llewelyn. The vibe quartet is made up of Llewelyn Chetty on bass, while joined on Piano by Shemual Mahabeer, smooth sounding Phumlani Mtiti on sax, and the groovy Brenton Govender on drums.
Following November’s bash, the last events in the #JazzyStraightAhead programme for this year will take place in December.
