Children’s Braveheart Archery Competition at the Highland Gathering
Fort Nottingham: Saturday 1 August
Children are invited to dress up as Highland Heroes, with kilts and face paint, and take part in Creative Toys’ Archery competition as part of the Fort Nottingham Highland Games this weekend, taking place in and around the Fort on Saturday 1 August.
Each participating children will get dressed in a kilt with a tartan sash, and made up with Braveheart Face paint and be given 10 arrows to shoot five Sassenach targets. The mean English King, Edward Longshank, being the highest value target (and the furthest away). Once 10 arrows have flown, the score will be compiled and a Bronze, Silver or Gold medal awarded, plus a Certificate signed by Malcom Wallace. There will also be a life-size William Wallace poster for the kid to pose next to for a photo in his/ her kilt, sash, bow and face paint.
The core focus of the day is the various Highland Games showcasing brute strength and stamina. Complementing the athletics will be the pipes and drums of the Durban and Pietermaritzburg Caledonian societies who will be performing; there will be Medieval sword fight demos, Scottish dancing, dog agility, stalls, kids’ activities, fire engine demo, bikes on display, talks in the museum, a chance to taste Haggis… and of course Whisky.
