16 Days of Activism Against Domestic Abuse
DAY ONE

Thursday 24 November 2016

From tomorrow, Friday 5 November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) until 10 December (Human Rights Day) globally we acknowledge the 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence, during which we encourage public awareness around abuse of women and children; changed behaviour and attitudes among perpetrators and the misinformed; tolerance and understanding of homosexuals and gender non-conformists; and support for victims of domestic and gender violence.

The Daily News is encouraging its readers to engage in difficult conversations and be part of the solution to this societal scourge. Campaigners realise that violence against women and children is not fixable within 16 days. Rather the intention is to put issues in the spotlight to be addressed throughout the year until our alarming statistics normalise.

The Daily News is putting its weight behind the 16 Days campaign this year with a daily feature which we invite readers to follow. We encourage readers to either wear a white ribbon which has become a global symbol of anti-domestic violence programmes, often supported by men and boy’s groups in particular. Alternatively by wearing orange to affiliate with the UN who have dubbed their campaign as “Orange the World”, to visibly show allegiance to the 16 days campaign.

Pictured over the campaign are representatives of some of the city’s leading NGOs who are at the coal face of domestic and gender violence.
