Day nine of our ‘Love the Arts’ feature, we go behind the scenes with Lisa Goldstone. She introduces herself by saying, “Hi, my name is Lisa and I like listening to music, writing poetry and random adventures.”
She studied Drama and Performance at UKZN Howard College and completed her Honours Degree in 2015. She started working backstage for a few student productions while studying from 2014 and in 2016 started working backstage first for the JOMBA Contemporary Dance Festival and then she worked on her first pantomime, KickstArt’s Sleeping Beauty. She does not have one specific role behind the scenes but has experience working a follow spot, assistant stage manager, fly man and in 2019 had the opportunity to work as a stage manager for the JOMBA Contemporary Dance Festival.
Saying which would be my favourite performance that she has worked on, she says as a freelancer it’s really hard to choose. “Each performance that I’ve had the opportunity to work on has its own element that has meaning to me. I’ve been apart of dance festivals and acting performances and each one has their own qualities that I hold dear.”
What do you love about live performances?
One of the things that I love about live performance is that it creates a collaborative environment. Everyone shares the same vision and is dedicated to ensuring the show runs smoothly. It creates a space where you feel more like family rather than colleagues. An environment where artists and crew are there for each other.
When was the last live performance?
The last performance I was a part of was Kickstart’s pantomime Alice in Wonderland in 2019
What do you miss?
I miss the excitement of setting up for the next production. The energy from the audience that the actors feed off of, the adrenaline and being kept on your toes working backstage, connecting with different artists you get the opportunity to work with as well as other crew family.
