9 December
This performance by the Dalisu Ndlazi’s 21st Suite at The Jazzy Rainbow is part of the Concerts SA Venue Circuit which aims to foster a love and support for live music in our communities, as well as anchor small and medium sized venues in urban and rural Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.
Durban’s longest-running jazz lounge, The Jazzy Rainbow, in association with Concerts SA, launched its first straight jazz programme on the eve of Heritage Day later in September and is following up with this concert. “#JazzyStraightAhead is about introducing regular, live, straight jazz concerts to our city in order to help keep the music alive,” says Oliver-Rene Haas. “
With his musical career beginning at the Siyakhula Community Development Centre in Umlazi KZN, Dalisu proves himself every time he gets on stage with his forever fresh and strong basslines. He is a young up and coming bassist who’s playing is far beyond his age. In 2012 he was selected as the National Schools Big Band bassist at the Standard Bank Youth Jazz festival held in Grahamstown. He is continuously holding that position for the past 3 years. Dalisu performed with great jazz artists such as Nduduzo Makhathini, Andile Yenana, Brian Thusi and Salim Washington, who has featured him in his new album which will be out later in the year. Dalisu is currently a student at the University of KwaZulu Natal where he plays for the UKZN Story Tellers that are under an exchange programme with VCU called “Jazz Bridge to Greater Understanding”.
The 9th of December will showcase a young man with a great musical future, who will perform mainly his own straight ahead jazz compositions with a mix of some of the music of his favourite jazz artists. For his concert he features Zoe The Seed on vocals, Thabo Sikhakhane on trumpet, Phumlani Mtiti on alto saxophone, Nick Pitman on lead guitar, Zibusiso Makhathini on piano and Riley Ghandhari on drums.
