Hilton Arts Festival
From opera, to classical and music revue to jazz and Maskani , there is something for everyone.
One of the obligations of a festival is to provide as wide a variety of genres of music, performance and art as possible. Festivals should also foster young new talent. The Hilton Arts Festival which runs from 13 to 15 September in the grounds of Hilton College, near Pietermaritzburg, is proud to present a wide selection of music.
There is classical, music revue and easy listening…..but three events a creating a special vibe.
Relatively new on the KZN scene are I Grandi Tenori. Attention all lovers of magnificent tenor voices! This concert ( Sunday 15 Sept @ 1030) promises to deliver, with spectacular gusto, these tenors singing some of the world’s best loved and well-known arias and songs. Be sure not to miss a concert which includes classics like the great Nessum Dorma, but also crowd favourites like Funiculi Funicular, O Sole Mio and Time to Say Goodbye. Durban’s own Kananelo Sehau and Mlindi Pato, under the artistic directorship of Sanele Mkhize will entertain you royally. I Grandi Tenori, whose aim is to explore classical and operatic music, was established in 2011 and last year sang their first international concert in Singapore. This concert is bound to raise the roof and bring on the goose bumps.
Join us in the Stella Marquee beer tent on Sunday 15 Sept from 11h00 to chill to the Qadasi vibe. David Jenkins, also known as Qadasi, is an accomplished Maskani musician who developed a deep passion for Zulu culture and music at a young age, growing up in Empangeni, right in the heart of Zululand. There is much excitement in the promise of what lies ahead for the Maskandi artist who is continuing in the footsteps of this powerful genre’s icon, the late great Johnny Clegg.
Saturday 14 September offers you two opportunities in the Crookes Craft Beer Bistro to listen to Philani Ngidi and the Afro Divas, who have been travelling the world since 2010, sharing stages with Hugh Masekela, Phumzekhemisi, Mahotella Queens, Freshly Ground, Rod Steward and Micassa. It is one of the most versatile young groups in Durban, featuring strong lead vocals and fabulous harmonies. They will provide the festival with Afro Jazz, Afro Pop, Afro Soul, Motown, Cabaret, Jazz and current pop.
