The Durban Chamber Choir invites you to celebrate the joy of choral singing in two vibrant autumn concerts—one in Pietermaritzburg and one in Durban.
The first concert takes place on Sunday, 24 May 2026 at 15:00 at the Hayfields Lutheran Church of the Cross, 2 Bester Road, Hayfields, Pietermaritzburg.
The second concert brings the music home to Durban on Sunday, 7 June 2026 at 15:00 at St Thomas Anglican Church, Musgrave, Durban.
The Choir presents an uplifting carefully chosen, eclectic programme of music which includes: the elegant Messe Brève by Charles Gounod composed in 1877 for two vocal parts and organ and expanded in 1890 to four choir parts and organ; Scandinavian master Knut Nystedt ; music by acclaimed South African journalist, Presbyterian minister and one of the most celebrated Xhosa hymn writers, John Knox Bokwe; Baba Yetu (Swahili: “Our Father”) the main theme song for the 2005 video game Civilization IV which became the first piece of video game music to be nominated for, and to win a Grammy Award, composed by Christopher Tin. Also on the programme is a rendition of the timeless crowd-pleaser, the iconic “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen.
The Durban Chamber Choir has been in existence for over 20 years. Its first members were mostly choristers from the Errol Slatter Chorale. The choir’s repertoire is wide-ranging, spanning from early plainchant to contemporary choral music, from Renaissance to modern, and from sacred to secular works, accompanied by organ, piano, and small orchestral ensembles. The Choir gives regular concerts in Durban and Pietermaritzburg, and has also visited several smaller towns in KwaZulu-Natal, performing in churches, school halls, and retirement homes – wherever it can bring pleasure to lovers of choral music. It is made up of voluntary members of all ages and from all walks of life, united in their love for choral singing.
The choir’s conductor is Margrit Deppe. She is the co-principal oboe and cor anglais of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and a commended organist. She teaches piano at Clifton School and, in 2023, was the church musician and cantor at the Nauen Rathenow Church District in Brandenburg, Germany. She studied Church music in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, and holds an honours BA in Choral Directing from the University of KZN.
