Luthuli Museum: Friday, 2 June
In association with Concerts SA and Luthuli Museum, iSupport Music Business presents Nicky Shange Live in concert. Vocalist Shange and her band will visit Groutville on Friday 2 June when she will grace the stage at The Luthuli Museum. Shange will be supported by local artist Themba Msomi and his band.
The talented Durbanite was head hunted by the legendary Busi Mhlongo as her backing vocalist in 1998. In 2001, she moved to Johannesburg to join Joyous Celebration. Shortly afterwards, she did backing vocals for Thandiswa Mazwai, Malaika and the Jaziel Brothers to name a few.
Nicky was noticed by Jonas Gwangwa, with whom she worked and traveled all around the world. She also worked with Themba Mkhize and Sibongile Khumalo.
In 2015, Nicky moved back to Durban where she is currently focusing on her solo career. She has been performing all around KZN honing her craft. Her band consists of Bernard Mndaweni (bass), Sanele Phakathi (keys) and Sbu Zondi (drums).
She is in the process of recording her live album. An all-round artist who likes to experiment with different genres, it is not easy to pin her down to one genre. She ranges from soul and African rhythms to jazz. Her passion for music shines through in her performances.
Shange’s accompaniment for this performance includes Sanele Phakhathi on keyboard, Sbu Zondi on Drums, Bernhard Mndaweni on bass guitar, Sphelele Nyide on guitar and Bonga Linda on backing vocals.
“A performance from myself and the band is an experience that’s not easily forgotten. I take pride in the fact that I’ll take the audience through a spectacular musical journey. Ranging from soul, jazz and mesmerizing African rhythms that leave avid music lovers fulfilled. I cannot wait to share with them what’s in my heart, through song” says Nicky Shange.
Themba Msomi is well known in the iLembe Region. His body language, facial expressions and his moves make him stand out from other artists on stage. When Themba Msomi tells you about his journey in art and music, which started 30 years ago, the passion and love for what he is doing is written on his face. He released his first album in 1997 titled Zulu Cowboy. The song Abafana (Boys) was popular, playing on radio stations across KZN. Besides being a musician Msomi has been seen in various films, including The Deejay Man, in which he played a detective.
