Premiere SA piece & New York Carnegie Hall soloists!

The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra
Winter Symphony Season 2017
Concert Four: Playhouse Opera, Durban: Thursday 22 June
The KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra gears up for its final concert in its four-week Winter Season on 15 June with piano taking centre stage.
The fourth concert on 22 June is also under the baton of Daniel Raiskin has four glorious pieces on the programme – including a premier piece by South African Matthijs van Dijk – and works by Lutoslawski; Haydn and Beethoven.
Raiskin, a hugely respected conductor who grew up in St Petersburg, the son of a prominent musicologist and known as one of Europe’s leading viola players, opens the evening with a new work, intriguingly entitled Drop – an original composition from Mattjis van Dijk – past recipient of the SAMRO Overseas scholarship and winner of the Priaulx Rainer Prize. Drop derives its nuances from the 21st century sound of electronic music and fantastical percussive tempo.
Joining the orchestra will be members of the DECODA Ensemble, an affiliate ensemble of the famed Carnegie Hall in New York.
The DECODA ensemble stay with the orchestra for the centre piece for the evening: Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertate – this joyous work has solo parts for violin, cello, oboe and bassoon pitted against a large orchestra.
Also on the programme are Dance Preludes by Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s iconic Fifth Symphony which brings the Winter Symphony Season to a grand close!
Refreshments and light snacks may be purchased in the foyer before the concert and during interval. Single tickets are available from www.computicket.com, 0861 915 8000, or from Shoprite Checkers Money Market counters.
