Durban – The Chairman: Thursday 8th and Friday June – 10.30pm
Durban – Jazzy Rainbow: Saturday 10th June – 7.30pm
In association with Concerts SA, outstanding trumpeter Robin Fassie-Kock presents the debut tour of his newly established Quintet, RFK5.
Comprised of an array of talented jazz performers, the Robin Fassie-Kock Quintet will premiere RFK5:The Acoustic Project at selected jazz venues in Cape Town and Durban.
Being one of South Africa’s most promising musical talents, Robin Fassie-Kock moves steadily towards becoming one of the finest young jazz musicians on the scene today. With a relaxed and soulful style that combines sensitivity and flair with great skill, the Robin Fassie-Kock Quintet consists of a strong core of local musical talent. In Cape Town he will be joined by Keenan Ahrends (guitar), Kyle Shepherd (piano), Shane Cooper (bass) and Jonno Sweetman (drums). In Durban the quintet will be comprised by Reza Khota (guitar), Nduduzo Makhathini (piano), Shane Cooper (bass), and Jonno Sweetman (drums).
Robin says: “After touring Norway with this music, I look forward to hear how some of my favourite musicians in South Africa interpret the music in my newly formed Quintet that will be performing in CPT and KZN for the first time. This will be part of a mini-series leading up to more releases from RFK for 2017.”
Born and raised in Cape Town, Robin Fassie-Kock is the nephew of the late great South African pop star Brenda Fassie. Robin started playing the trumpet in marching bands at the age of 16. After going through a right of passage in the isiXhosa traditional, he incorporates some sacred rhythm, harmonies and melodies to compositions.
Hailing from the Seawinds area of Cape Town – a melting pot of different cultures and musical influences- Robin is heavily influenced by the local Klopse minstrel tradition. He believes his upbringing played a huge role in forming his musical taste. He also feels that his parents´ ethnic and cultural backgrounds, belonging to the groups of Cape Coloured and isiXhosa, have had a lot to do with the way he thinks about art and music.
In 2015, Robin was invited to complete his studies at the Grieg Academy in Bergen (Norway), and consequently he has already performed with some of Norway’s greatest musicians such as soul singer Miss Tati and many of the country’s leading jazz musicians. As 2015 winner of the prestigious Jazz i sikte-Competition, he performed at both Nattjazz and Sildajazz in 2016.
In 2015 Robin toured Mauritius and South Africa together with jazz pianist Nduduzo Makhathini, featuring later in his recording Listening to the Ground. The same year Robin also contributed on Bokani Dyer’s World Music. He has since made his appearance at the Cape Town Jazz Festival alongside Zoe Modiga, Gavin Minter Septet and the seven-time SAMA award-winning pop band Beatenberg.
Robin Fassie-Kock’s 2017 KZN Tour is supported by Concerts SA through the Music Mobility Fund, a funding mechanism which offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music tours.
Concerts SA is a joint South African/Norwegian live music development project housed within the SAMRO Foundation. Concerts SA receives financial, administrative and technical support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SAMRO, the SAMRO Foundation and Concerts Norway. Working with musicians, promoters, venue owners and audiences, and providing support to the sector through research and skills development for music professionals, the project aims to build a vibrant and viable live music circuit in southern Africa. It also aims to develop an interest in and appreciation of live music by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at schools.
