Newcomers – Northern Coastal Regional Winner – Ninth (2018)
Making their first appearance at the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge, Felixton College did well representing the Northern Coastal Region.
A young team took to the field at St Mary’s DSG in Kloof with their first game up against Epworth School from Pietermaritzburg where they played out of their boots, only allowing Epworth to slot in one goal. The took on Ferrum, the feisty team from Newcastle had a brilliant tournament and the result was a 1 nil loss for the Zululand team. They then met Our Lady of Fatima in their third game of the day and put on a fine display, ending the pool game with a 1 all score. Their final game was against hockey giants, Durban Girls’ College who have raised the trophy three times in this tournament. The skilful Zululand players defended like champs and only let College net two goals.
Finishing fifth in the pool game, they took on Greytown High School in the cross-pool game. Aphiwe Nene, who was celebrating her 17th birthday on Sunday, was in the right spot at the right time and knocked in two magical goals for Felixton, to Bandile Masikane’s 1 goal for Greytown. Final score was 2-1, earning Felixton ninth place overall in KZN.
Chatting about the weekend, Coach for Felixton, Megan Campbell said, “Amazing weekend of top class hockey which my girls benefited greatly! The tournament was run impeccably, and SPAR ensured that everyone and everything was catered for. A massive thank you.”
