Just like Dad! Trading a microphone for a soft serve is Milan Edwards (5) pictured helping dad, Mark Edwards, ahead of Fathers Day, who has his hands full over the next few weeks as Durban comes alive with a multitude of fabulous events. Mark is on the organising team of the second day-long Imbumba Fiesta which will take place in Glenwood’s Bulwer Park on Youth Day: Saturday 16 June with a winter themed market, food stalls, info stands, an open mic and free afternoon concert; and he is planning for ISEA2018 (the 24th International Symposium on Electronic Art) which will come to Durban from 23 to 30 June creating a city-wide showcase of dozens of exhibitions, events, installations, walks, festivals and activities.

Imbumba Fiesta
Bulwer Park Glenwood: Sat 16 June
The second day-long Imbumba Fiesta will take place in Glenwood’s Bulwer Park on Youth Day: Saturday 16 June with a winter themed market, food stalls, info stands, an open mic and concert – all with an underlying message of encouraging good neighbourliness, supporting underprivileged children and showcasing local artists and crafters.
For this festival – the different aspects of the day are: open market to support businesses all day from 9am until 4pm; a Kids Zone caring for children all morning from 9am until 2pm; an Open Mic stage to expose raw local talent from 10 until 2pm; an on-site library drive to keep the nation informed from 11 until 2pm comprising a mobile library and reading marquee with loads of literary themed events, readings and stories; a healthy living promotion from noon until 2pm and a sun-downer concert from 3 until 7pm.
The Imbumba Fiesta is a project of Pietermaritzburg-based Mzala Nxumalo Centre for the Study of South African Society which works to promote the legacy of social activist, thinker, orator and writer, the late Mzala Nxumalo by focussing their research on the national question: What does it mean to be a nation? Their vision is to create a fun day which brings together families from the neighbourhood, visitors to Glenwood, but more particularly the children, caregivers, staff and host families of the homes in the area. One of the key strategic partners, Colgate, will be bringing their events truck to the Fiesta staffed by dental care professionals offering free dental check-ups and handing out complimentary toothpaste and toothbrushes to children.

ISEA2018: Intersections Durban
Durban: 23 – 30 June 2018
ISEA2018 is the 24th International Symposium on Electronic Art which will come to Durban from 23 to 30 June creating a city-wide showcase of dozens of exhibitions, events, installations, walks, festivals and activities, and a major global conference on new media art, all talking to the theme of Intersections.
ISEA2018 is the first ISEA to be held in the African sub-continent. Hosted in venues across Durban, this event will incorporate the fifth iteration of the Durban University of Technology Digital Festival (DigiFest) and Innovate Durban’s 2018 Innovation Festival (IF Durban) in a strategy to build a local partnership and legacy. ISEA2018 is almost a festival in two parts: an academic symposium at DUT; and then the dozens of events on the cultural programme. ISEA2018 this year also incorporates the annual DUT DigiFest programme of digital art activations and exhibitions mostly in and around DUT City Campus.
To the uninitiated, the public cultural component of ISEA2018 is an intense and lively ten-day festival featuring some of the world’s most prominent digital artists, comprising a vast array of interesting, brave, fun, innovative and insightful happenings taking place in various venues across the city. The works combine existing art forms (such as illustration, design, dance, fashion, architecture, photography, film and music), re-invented and re-considered to make them interesting and relevant in a new-media, technologically-savvy world. In most instances there is a cross-over with science; sometimes with a research component.
