Lighthouse Bible Church: 05 August 2017
The Lighthouse Bible Church – offering a beacon of hope and solace in KwaMashu – celebrates 20 years of operation with the launch of a commemorative book, and a special birthday service on 5 August.
Lighthouse Bible Church, situated behind Cashbuild, KwaMashu Station, will roll out the red carpet on 5 August with a special service from 9am until 1pm. Themed “God is still with us”, the birthday event features guest speaker Apostle Dlomo and guest artists, Babo Ngcobo, Thabani Ncube and Soul Healers.
During the service, a specially-created commemorative book looking at the church’s first 20 years, will be launched to the public. Entitled, Bishop SK Mngomezulu and Lighthouse Bible Church, the book is dedicated to, and inspired by 20 years of service to the community. It is written by Atlas Philani Duma and Jabu Radebe.
From operating as a house group in Kwa Mashu to now having 21 branches in different regions in KZN and Eastern Cape, Lighthouse Bible Church has much to be grateful for.
Bishop Simon Khetha Mngomezulu is the founder and the leader of Lighthouse Bible Church. Born in 1961 at Hlabisa the Northern part of KwaZulu Natal, raised in a polygamous extended family (his father had four wives) he remembers a tough and difficult childhood. Graduating from Eshowe Collage of Education, he studied Theology in a Bible College in the institution of Apostolic Faith Mission. He served for two years at the College, then proceeded with the ministry, serving as a young pastor. He went to do another two years in All Africa Bible College, which was under the Apostolic Church until 1992 when he was already leading the ministry. He was ordained to be an official Pastor by Bishop Joseph Phungula in December 1991.
He based himself in KwaMashu – which during the nineties was a hotbed of political violence. This is one of the places that were mostly infested by political violence pre 1994. The politics of the time were complicated: major riots in KwaMashu were frequently between hostel dwellers, mostly affiliated to Inkatha Yenkululeko Yesizwe, and township dwellers, which were the members of UDF. The regular fights were rotating around Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu and the surrounding areas – including Lindelani which saw great unrest.
During that era the young Bishop SK Mngomezuluwas was engaged in political youth organisations at a time when many of the youth were highly politicised and actively involved in the struggle. SK Mngomezulu hated the strategy of using violence to defend democracy for the people of South Africa. His motivations were based on teaching the community about the struggle. His ‘Stop Killing’ campaign became the first priority and “Siyabahlahlela’ term was frequently used by the comrades, which means ‘teach them about the struggle’.
Lighthouse Bible Church contributed significantly to bringing about change and challenging the stigma attached to KwaMashu township.
Come and join in the celebrations of the first 20 years of the journey of Bishop SK Mngomezulu and the history of Lighthouse Bible Church!
