Hilton Arts Festival Jongosi Programme & Youth Auditions

Hilton College: 15 – 17 September 2017
Jongosi: Friday 15 September

Keeping arts alive for future generations, the Hilton Arts Festival (taking place at Hilton College from 15 – 17 September) is working proactively to introduce young people to the wondrous all-encompassing world of live performance and to this end is offering a Jongosi / youth component as part of the main festival, and is looking for youthful performers to participate in the festival itself.

This year, the festival invites schools to participate in the eighth Jongosi Festival. Save the date if you would like your drama, music or dance classes to experience the best of live performances on offer in the country. The Jongosi Festival embedded in the main festival, takes place on Friday 15 September, and has a specifically, carefully-selected age-appropriate programme aimed at Grades 6 – 10. The full programme will be released in due course.

Festival Director, Sue Clarence stated: “The day is structured to ensure that learners will be fully-occupied attending a variety of fabulous, innovative theatre. The aim is to instil a love of the performing arts, to provide enjoyment and to stimulate thought and discussion.”

The festival is embarking on a new project this year. It aims to provide a platform for exceptionally talented young performers to gain experience and to have a taste of the professional world of performing arts.

Continuing, Clarence said, “We are inviting talented young artists to perform in an informal / busking capacity on equipped stages in the two main food outlets, in the open-air amphitheatre and in designated areas in the craft market area. These groups could be a dance troupe able to perform on grass or in a paved courtyard; a physical theatre piece that is able, through its design, to “pop up” anywhere; marching bands; mime artists; string quartets or marimba bands. Anything your pupils shine at!”

“The second option is for a limited number of exceptionally talented performers to be cast in a one-off concert staged in a variety- type format, alongside professional performers. Details for this will be determined by the talent discovered at the audition.”

Auditions will be held at the Roy Couzens Theatre at Westville Boys’ High Theatre on 21 June from 16h00. The address is 26 Wandsbeck Rd, Dawncrest, Westville.

A panel chaired by Evan Roberts, one of Durban’s leading independent musicians, eventors and musical directors, will select successful groups and individuals to participate in the Hilton Arts Festival 25th anniversary year event. He will also direct the one-off concert.

Give your pupils the opportunity to submerge themselves in quality performance at the 25th Hilton Arts Festival this year at Hilton College from 15 – 17 September.
