Our Lady of Fatima
After a five year break, Our Lady of Fatima made their second appearance at the SPAR KZN School Girls Hockey Challenge Grand Finals where they ended off their superb efforts in fifth place.
In the playoff for fifth, they met the ‘giant slayers’, King Edward High School from Matatiele who appeared to have run out of steam. Fatima netted an impressive four goals in their thirty minutes, with the first goal going in early and following those up towards the end of the game with three quick fire goals.
Fatima started their Grand Finals with a blasting of 5 goals to Wartburg Kirchdorf’s 1. Their next game the met St Anne’s who have medalled four times in their five previous Grand Finals. The second game was less successful for the Durban North team, going down 3-0. They pulled up their socks and absolutely out did themselves in their third game against defending champions, St Mary’s DSG, with the final whistle blowing with both teams having one goal on the score board. In their final pool game, Fatima took on travelling team, Ferrum High School from Newcastle and continuing their good form, netted 3 more goals with Ferrum not getting much of a show in in their opponent’s end.
In the final classifications, Fatima took on Grantleigh College in the second game on Sunday, and again, similar to the Ferrum game, found the back of the net 3 times with Grantleigh not really being able to penetrate the sterling Fatima defence.
Coach for Fatima, Jacinta Jubb said, “The Fatima girls were very excited to compete in this past weekend’s SPAR tournament. We were in a tough pool but the girls showed their determination and hard work ethic to come away 3rd in the pool, winning 2, losing 1 and drawing to the winners of the overall tournament.”
“They put in a great effort on Sunday coming away with a 3-0 and 4-0 win and ended up 5th overall. I am happy with the placement but definitely feel like we are a top 4 team.”
“Over all the weekend demonstrated how far this team has come along since the beginning of the season, I am proud of them and what we have managed to achieve as a team!”
In their previous appearance at the inaugural tournament, Fatima also finished a well-earned fifth in 2011.
