Denis Hurley Centre
Christmas Fundraising Concert
Mariannhill Cathedral: Sun 26 Nov at 3pm
The Denis Hurley Centre is hosting a glorious afternoon fundraising concert at St Joseph’s Cathedral, Mariannhill on Sunday 26 November at 3pm featuring the Durban Symphonic Choir and soloists, to herald the advent season and to get into the Christmas spirit.
The concert features the magnificent voices of the Durban Symphonic Choir – one of the oldest amateur choirs in South Africa (founded in 1966) who specialise in major classic choral works under the direction of Ros Conrad. For this concert they will be working with longtime collaborator, conductor / organist Christopher Cockburn. Soloists for the afternoon include Nozuko Teto who has enjoyed a highly successful career singing in international opera theatres and has now returned to her homeland to wow local audiences with her sensational soprano voice. She has used her talents before to entertain homeless people at the Denis Hurley Centre. Joining her will be tenor soloist and Catholic priest, Father Sibonelo Mbanjwa who is a member of the religious order ‘The Oblates of Mary Immaculate’ of which Archbishop Hurley was also a member.
The programme features a variety of favourite festive tunes and Christmas carols – as well as some beautiful less well-known songs which have been carefully chosen to complement the evergreen, singalong numbers.
The Denis Hurley Centre is a leading NGO taking care of the needs of the city’s homeless, vulnerable and refugees, in the heart of the city of Durban. The concert is a celebration of Christmas, as well as being the first in a series of celebratory awareness-creating and fundraising events. 2024 is a big year next year: it is the 10th anniversary of DHC; the 20th anniversary of the death of Archbishop Hurley and the 30th anniversary of liberation and democratic elections.
Thanks to the generosity of Bishop Neil Frank and all the performers, every Rand from ticket sales will go directly towards helping the homeless.
“We would love to welcome as many of our friends, supporters, volunteers and staff to what promises to be a wonderful concert,” enthused Dr Raymond Perrier, spokesperson for the Denis Hurley Centre.
