Faith Leaders
For the 16th year, South Africa has taken part in the global 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, which started on 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) including World Aids Day on 1 December ending on International Human Rights Day on 10 December.
Today is the last feature in The Daily News. Since the beginning of the campaign we have invited ambassadors from strategically-chosen communities to endorse the initiative. Men and women representing NGOs; media houses; the creative industries (theatre, museum and music); sporting codes; the corporate sector; the hospitality industry and young leaders – all publicly pledged to be part of the project.
Today, the final day, leaders in the faith community add their voices to the campaign.
As we wrap up the campaign, we need to be mindful that although gender abuse and domestic violence will no longer be in the media spotlight from next week, the situation remains critical with statistics being unacceptably high. The reminders and learnings from the campaign should continue for 365 days of the year until the situation is normalised.
