Urban Lime Properties, the commercial urban regeneration specialists, is proud to announce that their work within the City of Durban has been nominated for a United Nations Award by Invest Durban (the eThekwini Municipality unit for promoting inward investment) for meeting sustainable development goals in 2017.
At the United Nations Summit for Sustainable Development in 2015, the United Nations Member States approved the 2030 Development Agenda, which comprises 17 sustainable development goals and 169 targets. The Agenda constitutes an ambitious, over-arching, universal action plan for sustainable development for the world by 2030.
Acheivement of these goals requries huge investment in key sectors. According to United Nations estimates, the global investment need for achieving these goals are in the order of $5-7 trillion per annum, with an annual investment gap of several trillions of US dollars in developing countries alone. This gap cannot be met soley by public investment, so foreign direct investment and other sources of international funding have an important role to play in order to bridge the shortfall. The South African government has tasked each municipality to find, support and promote foreign investment to work towards these goals.
The Award’s aim is to recongnise and disseminate global best-practice in promoting and facilitating foreign direct investment of specific special development goals. Urban Lime Properties is the United Nations invited, eThekwini supported nominee for the awards 2017. The ceremony for the Awards will take place on 20 November 2017 in Geneva, Switzerland.
In summary, Economic Development and Durban Investment Promotion for eThekwini Municipality has assisted and supports Urban Lime’s investment of R1.2bn (Eur 77m) since 2014, with further planned investment of R1bn in the next 18 months. This has resulted in significant changes to high-rise, main-street and iconic buildings; and key nodal precinct redevelopments along selected priority corridoors, resulting in the creation of 450+ jobs and renewed confidence in the City of Durban.
