Albertina Sisulu’s Century Celebrated

Albertina Sisulu’s Century Celebrated in KZNPO’s 2018 Spring Season
Durban City Hall: Season – 1 – 22 November
Concert two: 8 November at 7.30pm
A programme honouring what would be the centenary of matriarch and stalwart Albertina Sisulu will be performed on Thursday evening as the second part of this week’s KZN Philharmonic concert Spring Season taking place in Durban City Hall on Thursday 8 November.
Sisulu would have celebrated her centenary birthday in 2018. Bongani Ndodana-Breen’s Ma Sisulu Sinfonia is a work drawing from Sisulu’s Xhosa roots in the Eastern Cape and reflects on her quiet strength and resilience of one of South Africa’s giants in the journey to liberation.
The piece features the vocal talents of Sounds of Joy – who are celebrating their 15th anniversary this year, and soloists Linda Nteleza, Abongile Fumba, Wayne Mkhize and Andile Dlamini.
German conductor Justus Frantz takes the podium on 8 November.
As well as the Ndodana-Breen piece, the evening comprises a mostly Mozart programme. Showcasing the early flowering of the 18th century Austrian composer’s genius, this features performances of the Overture to Lucio Silla; the ground breaking Piano Concerto K 271, a superb debut vehicle to introduce the award-winning young Russian virtuoso, Dina Ivanova; and the Coronation Mass in C Major, a marvelous platform for the evening’s vocal artists to shine.
