Woza Moya – Honouring Visual Artists

Jose Masango is February Artist of the Month.
The proactive and innovative Woza Moya creative entrepreneurship project based in Hillcrest has been honouring a talented visual artist every month over lockdown to build their profile, showcase their work and remind the public of the incredible art-makers active in the project.
Each month a different artist is paid to paint a 1,2m x 1,2m wall panel which is displayed on the wall outside the Woza Moya, Hillcrest AIDS Centre shop.
Artist for the month of February 2022 is Jose Masango; a self taught artist whose featured painting entitled Colourful Tradition is inspired by the beauty and dignity of traditional attire. Jose’s work typically is vibrant and bright and this painting is a celebration of colour.
Jose Masango was born in Kwa Mashu on 10 February 2002. Jose attended art workshops at the Phansi Museum. He was inspired to take up art by watching his brother and a good friend, who made art with commitment and passion. They started off drawing characters from the animated TV series, “Dragon Ball Z” and then later developed into drawing hyper realistic drawings. He is fascinated by images that have a story to tell and how to share that story through his own unique vision.
“No matter how darks things get, if you fight you will always find a way to shine,” enthused Masango.
Woza Moya assists each artist by marketing their work for the entire month. A greeting card is made of the painted wall panel and sold in their shops so that artists can earn an ongoing passive income. This has worked well with artists earning from R200 to R1000 a month from the sale of the cards. The painting itself is for sale and people are invited to bid for the painting. Bidding starts at R1500 at the start of each month, and will close at the end of the month. The person who has the highest bid gets to purchase the painting.
The Woza Moya Artists’ Wall, would like to thank the 100% Foundation for their 12 month sponsorship which makes this monthly event possible. Jose Masango is the ninth artist, and his work will be featured for the whole month of February
