King Edward High School
Finishing their third appearance in style at the SPAR KZN School Girls Hockey Challenge, King Edward ended their two days of exceptional hockey in sixth place after going down to Our Lady of Fatima in the final classification games.
Maintaining their nickname of ‘giant slayers’, King Edward High School continued to be Durban Girls’ College’s nemesis with a nil all draw in their pool game. Impressively, KEHS notched up two wins with a 3-0 against Amanzimtoti High School, and a 3-1 win against travelling team, Grantleigh from Richards Bay. Their only loss in the pool games was against newcomers, St John’s from Pietermaritzburg.
Taking to the field in the first game on Sunday, they met the uber efficient German team from Wartburg Kirchdorf School. At the conclusion, the score was level on 1 goal apiece, with the game being decided on penalty shootouts. King Edward High School edged Wartburg out, going up 2-1. The win against Wartburg earned them a place in the playoff for fifth, here they took on Durban North Regional Winner, Our Lady of Fatima. The hard working team energy levels deflated as Fatima got on top of them, and didn’t give King Edward any room to gain their composure. Fatima knocked in 4 goals, securing fifth place. For the second consecutive year, KEHS earned a well-deserved sixth place, and continued to impress at this tournament.
