In celebration of the summer holiday with promise of long lazy days, the Ladysmith Black Mambazo academy presents the first Inanda Dam World Music Festival featuring the stella line up of Ladysmith Black Mambazo; Lira; Oliver Mtukudzi; The Muffinz; Mbuso Khoza; Steve Kekana; Shabalala Rythms, Jeremy Oliver and Joe Nina to take place at the dam on Sunday 9 December.
“Our intention is for this event to happen annually and become one of Durban’s and KZN’s signature festive season events. The idea is to feature some of Africa’s greatest music icons who have made it big globally thereby promoting African culture through music and other arts forms,” explains festival organiser Xolani Majozi.
Five times Grammy award winners Ladysmith Black Mambazo is one of the most globally iconic isicathamiya groups. They have started a programme called Ladysmith Black Mambazo Mobile Academy aimed at inspiring and teaching young musician the intricacies of isicathamiya music and also discovering talent in acappela and indigenous music. They have been running workshops and masterclasses in various provinces to unearth new talent which will be showcased in this event.
“This will be a family-friendly fun event where music lovers can start their festive season with a relaxing day of great music. The event is also aiming at attracting people from all walks of life and from across the entire continent of Africa,” continues Majozi.
The event will happen during the day starting at 10am till 8pm. There will also be pop-up music stands on site where people will be encouraged to buy music of participating artists – to encourage people to buy original not pirated music, as Christmas gifts and event souvenirs. The event will encourage festival-goers to support local music and use it as a way of embracing other African cultures and heritage.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo will also use this event as a way of paying tribute to Nelson Mandela as we celebrate his centenary this year. President Nelson Mandela was a great fan of Ladysmith Black Mambazo – saying their music is a mobile academy of South African music and culture.
Inanda Dam festival tickets are now available at Computicket a R200 per person. Children under 10 are free.
Bring picnics (no glass bottles) and blankets, fold up chairs and sunhats. There will also be refreshments for sale.
