Making their sixth appearance at the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN School Girls Hockey Challenge that took place this weekend at St Mary’s DSG in Kloof. Ferrum was one of four travelling teams to compete in the competition.
Being the first to qualify for the Grand Finals, Ferrum met the nine other regionals that all won their regional tournaments. Having missed last year, the team from Newcastle made a welcome return to the tournament.
In their first pool game, the met the daunting team from Hilton, St Anne’s DSG played a magical game but Ferrum managed to hold them to a 3-0 loss. Next up for Ferrum was defending champions and host team, St Mary’s DSG. With an identical outcome, Ferrum went down with a valiant defence against Saints, with the final score being 3-0. Third up, they met Wartburg Kirchdorf and in a nice running game, the German inland team managed to go one up over Ferrum. The final pool game was against Our Lady of Fatima, and for the third time on Saturday, the Northern KZN team went down in a well fought battle against Fatima, with the result of 3-0.
In the final classification games, Ferrum, having come fifth in their pool, took on Amanzimtoti High School, who finished fifth in their pool. The two teams took to the field in a 30 minute game, and Ferrum managed to slot a single goal in against the Durban South Regional winners, ending their 2017 campaign with a ninth overall in the KZN based regional.
