Hilton College
14 – 16 September 2018
Everything takes place on the campus of Hilton College – over three days: Friday 14, Saturday 15 and Sunday 16.
Get there early – there is often a queue to get in through the main gates!
Become familiar with the festival map as quickly as possible so you know were performance and activity venues, food places and exhibitions are.
Pack for every weather option – you do get all seasons in one day in Hilton
Wear comfy shoes – so you can wonder around the campus comfortably
Have cash on you – better than standing in the ATM queues
Book some key shows ahead of time – cos the favourite shows do tend to sell out before hand
To plan your fest, programmes can be picked up all over the place. The Hilton website has a full list of where you can get your tabloid-size newsprint Hilton programme
All shows come recommended – Hilton offers the best of all fests – but of special mention are Selwyn & Gabriel a magical modern mystery about two strangers with secrets. Silkworm weaves a beautiful cocoon around reality, created and directed by Jenine Collocott, performed by Taryn Bennett; and Mike van Graan’s brilliant drama Green Man Flashing is a fast-paced political thriller.
But leave time to enjoy lots of the free stuff, craft markets, art exhibitions, stalls, live entertainment and food and drink
And also leave time to impulse book for shows which you hear about in the coffee queue!
The best festival involves doing a mix of interesting things – theatre; dance; comedy; musical theatre; family theatre; classical music; music revue; big band and contemporary music; visual art and crafts, as well as a series of mindscape lectures, events and discussions.
This year in honour of Mandela’s centenary commemorations, there is a strong Mandela feel – two massive outdoor exhibitions: the THINK bench and T.O.L.E.R.A.N.C.E. installation Also jazz pianist Burton Naidoo has transcribed some of Mandela’s most iconic speeches to music: Our Song; a collection of John Meyer’s artworks Mandela: A Life’s Journey will be on display; as will be 67 Blankets for Mandela.
