Don’t look away Everyone has a role to play in changing behaviours; educating men and boys to act appropriately; supporting victims and drawing attention to harmful prejudice, violence and abuse.
The media have a crucial role to play by encouraging meaningful engagement and positive learnings, and by leading by word and example.
Some of the city’s key media personalities have pledged to do their part during the campaign by working towards significant and lasting solutions to domestic violence and gender abuse. All the media houses in the photograph are committed to supporting the campaign, and in many cases will be hosting programmes and projects throughout the 16 Days.
The Daily News is running a series of features during the 16 Days. They are also encouraging staff and readers to wear orange in support of the UN’s campaign to symbolize a brighter future without violence, or paint an index finger with orange nail polish. Many local NGOs are suggesting wearing a white ribbon – which is South Africa’s nominated symbolic action for the campaign.
Skye Radio is having a focus on abuse during their Evening Express show daily (between 6 and 7pm). They will be unpacking various topics with activists, NGOs and specialists to highlight how we can transcend from “Victim” to “Victor” and will provide free advice to anyone reaching out. Should you or anyone you know need help please email keresha@skyeradio.co.za. Listen in via their app or follow their website (www.skyeradio.co.za) to engage with them and the projects run in conjunction with sister organisation PSK.
