The Chairman: Saturday 22 December @10pm
In association with Concerts SA and Akum Agency, post-folk band Urban Village will embarking in December on their first tour across southern Africa.
For this tour, Urban Village will be joined on tour by Mozambican band Cantinho das Cores. Honouring this collaboration, the tour has been named Village das Cores Tour.
The Village das Cores Tour starts early December in Mozambique, spreading throughout the rest of the month with shows in eSwatini, Nelspruit, Soweto, East London and Durban.
Different bands will join them on stage in each city. Tégui in Maputo, The Buddies and Goodnews in Nelspruit, Msaki in East London, and The Brother Moves On in Durban.
A musical motion of sound fused by urban and rural influences based on society’s daily survival, struggles and joys, the music of Urban Village encourages and motivates, entertains, and awakens cultural and traditional consciousness. It encapsulates day-to-day personal and societal experiences echoed with teachings by the elderly, bringing us back- not to be regressive but to take us back to a point where our identity reflects us and our stories.
Inspired by an innate love for the sound of music and with rhythm that flows through their bones with the same consistency as blood, the sound of Urban Village can be described as a blend of folk music, Zulu rock, Xhosa funk, mbaqanga, maskandi layered with electric and funky acoustic melodies clearly rooted in South Africa.
The members of Urban Village are Lerato Lichaba (guitar & vocals), Tubatsi Moloi (flute & lead vocals), Xolani Mtshali (drum & vocals), Simangaliso Dlamini (bass), and Mojalefa Mofokeng (percussions & vocals).
“Urban Village are excited to be performing in Mozambique and eSwatini for the first time. A big thank you to Concerts SA for helping make it possible to take our music and the stories we share each time we step onto the stage across borders to new eyes and ears. The opportunity to collaborate with Cantinho das Cores, and to play with different musicians in each place we go, is also a great chance to exchange, dialogue, and bring the village together. ” – Simangaliso ‘Smeg’ Dlamini.
Formed by Trkz, May Mbira and Nandele during late night improvisation sessions in Maputo, Cantinho das Cores is a project that responds to the insatiable interest in the exploration of instruments and rhythms. Guitars, tambourines, mbiras, loop pedals, synthesizers, and many more instruments are combined in a playful meditation on music and their own lives.
Cantinho das Cores is the result of existing individual compositions by the three musicians and an ongoing collective process of creation. Their skills are combined in a virtuous and unique manner, bringing the listener to familiar yet staggering sounds. The three band members are among the most promising and relevant artists in Mozambique.
Urban Village’s Village das Cores SADC Tour is supported by Concerts SA through the Music Mobility Fund, a funding mechanism which offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music tours.
