She Rises, We Rise
DHC: Sat 1 Sept
You are warmly invited to attend the Indaba entitled “SHE RISES, WE RISE” on Saturday, 1 September 2018, at the Denis Hurley Centre. Come and be part of the celebration of our Womanhood, our Heritage and our new beginnings, with our special guest speaker Sherry Zalika Sykes, United States Consul General to KZN.
The Indaba has been initiated by a group of women who are passionate about the issues relating to women particularly the marginalized. The powerful Indaba theme, “SHE RISES, WE RISE” is set to build bridges and empathy between the women and girl child we may otherwise neglect and those already on the rise. The Indaba will focus on our universal Faith as the cornerstone of our strength to rise, child pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, the plight of the refugee women, illiteracy, violence against women and various forms of addiction that have such a shattering effect on family life and community cohesion. The Indaba will also focus on health and well being as well as sustainable living and designing products from recycled material.
Highlights include free: health and well being tests/screening (eye, blood pressure, breast examination, pap smears, HIV); counselling and referral on site; workshops; motivational speakers; literacy reading corners; entertainment (music, poetry recitals, choirs, fashion show); craft makers: sustainable fashion designers, Durban based artists, book sellers and jewellers exhibiting and selling their wares and tea and lunch will be served.
Ukhozi FM- Celebrating Creative Women!
Sunday 26 Aug at 6pm
Popular Ukhozi FM Jazz Host Mandla Mdletshe will be hosting some super talented South African lady musicians to celebrate Women’s Month on his show on Sunday 26 August. Presented by The Headroom and supported by Concerts SA, this month’s special event features women who have been making waves in the music industry with their fresh uncompromising styles.
With power packed singer Zethe Mdletshe fronting up a hot trio, two strong young vocalists will also be featured, namely Wandithanda Makandula and Nosihe Zulu. Clocking up ten amazing years on the SA performance circuit, KZN based all-girl band Heels over Head are also on the bill of fare.
Pietermaritzburg born Nosihe Zulu enjoys a diverse repertoire and adds keys to her voice. Her claim to fame is securing eighth place in the 12th Season of SA Idols in 2016. Working towards a degree in music, this young lady is also cooking up some original material while making her presence felt on the local jazz scene, both as band leader and vocalist.
Heels, as they are fondly known, need no introduction in KZN, and are rapidly making conquests in other provinces due to their determination to stay together and play together. Headed up by the ebullient and sweet voiced songstress Thuli Zama, the all-girl sensation includes accomplished Callie Thompson on keys, Nosihle Nkomo on bass and Rebekah Doty behind the kit.
