The Jazzy Rainbow, Friday 31st August
This performance by The Shemual Mahabeer Collective at The Jazzy Rainbow is part of the Concerts SA Venue Circuit which aims to foster a love and support for live music in our communities, as well as anchor small and medium sized venues in urban and rural Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.
Durban’s jazz lounge, The Jazzy Rainbow, in association with Concerts SA, launched its first straight jazz programme on the eve of Heritage Day in September 2016 and continues to follow up with the same concept. “#JazzyStraightAhead is about introducing regular, live, straight jazz concerts to our city in order to help keep the music alive,” says Oliver-Rene Haas.
Shemual Mahabeer is one of Durban’s best and most versatile professional musicians, music directors and music lecturers. He majored in Jazz Piano and Composition and Arranging at UKZN, Howard College. Being in the music industry for over 15 years, he has shared the stage with many local and international artists including Khaya Mthetwa, Nadine, Israel Houghton, Byron Cage, Ron Kenoly, Andrew Young, The Arrows, Simphiwe Dana, Trey Songs, Miguel and French Montana. He has performed at various festivals including the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, Joy Of Jazz and The Cape Town Jazz Festival. Television appearances have been on Morning Live, Afro Cafe, Top Billing and on MTV, where he was part of the band for international artist French Montana at the MTV African Music Awards 2014.
Mahabeer has directed bands for various theatre productions in and around Durban- shows like Legally Blonde, Hairspray, Dolphins By Starlight and Night Of 100 Stars to name a few. He has been nominated three times for Best Musical Director at the Durban Theatre Awards. He lectured at UKZN from 2006 to 2008 and, since 2012, has been a lecturer at the Campus Of Performing Arts DBN, where he teaches and inspires the learners to become true professionals in the music industry.
During his show he will play his favourite straight jazz tunes in the first set and will mix the second set up with some of his own jazz compositions. He will be accompanied by Llewelyn Chetty on bass and Donavan Jacob on drums.
Concerts SA is a joint South African/Norwegian initiative housed under the auspices of the Stakeholder Hub within the SAMRO Foundation; it receives financial, administrative and technical support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the SAMRO Foundation and Kulturtanken. The project aims to support live music in South Africa by finding and implementing ways to create a vibrant and viable live music circuit. It also aims to develop an interest in and appreciation of live music by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at schools.
