St Clements: Monday 14 March at 6pm
Two of Durban’s finest thespians – Pieter Scholtz and Maurice Podbrey – catching up in St Clements ahead of Maurice Podbrey’s one man show tonight.
Durban born actor, director actor, theatre personality, teacher, long-time promoter of acting talent, Maurice Podbrey, is the special guest at the monthly Monday at St Clements gathering, performing his delightful one man show, The Kid who did it for Nothing on Monday 14 March at 6pm.
Podbrey, educated at DHS, went to Joburg and then overseas for what he figured would be two years. It stretched to 40, mainly in Montreal, Canada, where he started and ran a theatre. In 1997 after its 27th season, he decided to return to South Africa.
Why he did so is the subject — often humorous — of the show. Since then and in his retirement, Podbrey has lived between Canada and Cape Town, where he founded a non-profit devoted to developing South African theatre. This will, in effect, be Podbrey’s “farewell” to South Africa.
