Adding to their impressive tally at the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge, St Anne’s notched up their first silver in the seven appearances at the Grand Finals.
St Anne’s started their tournament in thumping style, meeting Matatiele’s King Edward High School, Amanztimtoti High School and Greytown High School. All three games ended with St Anne’s sitting on 4 goals and not conceding any. In their final pool match, they met hosts, St Mary’s DSG in a titanic game with the run of play going from end to end. The hosts took the game 2-1 after a thrilling game towards the end of day one.
Day two started with St Anne’s meeting Durban Girls’ College in the first semi-final. In yet another riveting game for Saints, the scoreline was 1 goal apiece at full time. The game went to the deciding penalty shootout. It went down to the wire, with both schools converting their first two attempts. St Anne’s knocked in their third penalty and their keeper, Reo Sachane rising to the challenge defending Colleges final run advancing them into the gold silver medal game.
In their second gold silver game at the Grand Finals, St Anne’s met St Mary’s, the second time of the 2018 tournament. Having previously played each other in the pool games where the scoreline was 2-1 to St Mary’s DSG. The Hilton team was unable to break free of the St Mary’s dominance, unable to stop the inform hosts as they determinedly knocked in 3 goals.
Chatting about the weekend, Head Coach for St Anne’s College, Robin Jones said, “Loved it. Good way to end the season with a test against the best teams in the province. I think the better team on the day won the final but just very grateful to be part of this weekend’s festivities.”
