Sunday 30 April
The Rainbow in Pinetown and Concerts SA bring you SA Roy and Forest Jam Band with special guest Madala Kunene on Sunday 30 April.
SA Roy and the Forest Jam Band were born out of a 2015 gathering with local and international musicians in Madagascar. For their 2017 tour, Sa Roy are collaborating with South African/Swiss Forest Jam Band and for some concerts with Madala Kunene.
“The experience of our 2015 Forest Jam gathering with local musicians in Madagascar was very special, as we participating musicians very quickly found our common denominator.
Although the music of Madagascar and South Africa have their own idiosyncrasies – or perhaps because of it- we experienced a very special atmosphere of musical collaborations. The magic that unfolded during our 6 weeks of work with the Malagasy Acapella trio Sa Roy prompted us to record their debut album PELAKOLO and to form an international group to tour Southern Africa in 2017” says Forest Jam bassist, violinist and accordion player Matthias Abächerli.
The Madagascar based Acapella trio’s leader Soaraza Patrice Thomas is a talented singer/song writer, dancer and multi-instrumentalist. Ando Pra, the second voice in the trio, has earned his nickname Michael Jackson for his great voice and dance routine. Damy Sinaotsy’s baritone always stuns the audience.
Sa Roy’s debut album PELAKOLO tells the story of 3 young men who grew up together in the Androy region on the Southern tip of the island of Madagascar. Sa Roy’s musical style is influenced by their vocal training which includes Acapella, mandolin, acoustic guitar, traditional percussion playing and traditional Tandroy dance. The exchange, sharing and experience they gained during a collaboration project with Forest Jam in 2015 gave them the opportunity to improve their musical style. Soaraza Patrick Thomas, the songwriter, talks about friendship and hardship, addresses corruption and exploitation of their natural resources. He sings about the crime of having their livestock stolen, climatic changes resulting in famine. Soaraza’s song about his ancestor shows deep respect and his love songs are beautiful in their simplicity.
Forest Jam band: Fabio Meier – drums, percussion and kalabash Solomon Willy – electric guitar, Damy Sinaotsy – bass vocal, Soaraza Patrice Thomas – first voice, guitar, khabosy and madoline, Ando Pra – second voice and hand percussion, Matthias Abächerli – violin and bass and Musical Director of the project.
In the first half Madala Kunene will present a fresh breeze with some of his most popular songs accompanied by Sa Roy ( Damy Sinaotsy – bass vocal, Soaraza Patrice Thomas – first voice, guitar, khabosy and madoline, Ando Pra – second voice and hand percussion) and the Forest Jam core group with Matthias Abächerli and Fabio Meier.
