Band on the Bay: POSTPONED – NEW DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED SOON!
A significant birthday deserves a memorable big bash, and to mark this momentous occasion for the Point Yacht Club’s historic milestone, the club welcomes one and all to join them at their party on Saturday 20 May.
Celebrating their 125th birthday, the club will be putting on a one of a kind evening, an evening entitled ‘Band on the Bay’. For one night only, sit on the banks of the club, gazing out over the Durban Marina as the sunsets, while the fabulous, quirky South Jersey Pom Poms perform.
“Being a yacht club, we thought it fitting and unique to have the featured band performing from a boat, moored in the marina.” Craig Millar, Commodore for the Point Yacht Club said smiling. “The stage will be floating in front of our lawns. I stand to be corrected, but I believe this is the first time in Durban that this will be happening, making our birthday a totally one-of-a-kind bash!”
“In the build up to our birthday, we have had two wonderful ‘On The Bay’ events earlier this year, and last year our beach site hosted the wondrously whimsical Band in the Sand. Now, it is Band On The Bay. A Durban sunset has never been this magnificent, as you grab a bite to eat, enjoy a few beverages and relish an evening of blues and views.”
With the rich history, the yacht club has seen many a character pass through with a number of Olympic sailors donning the club’s colours, and more recently a number of youth sailors being selected to represent the country.
The first recorded regatta in Durban to be fully reported on was planned for Queen Victoria’s birthday in 1858. Then in 1892, a group of yachtsmen decided to form a separate club, breaking away from the then Natal Yacht Club, that later became the Royal Natal Yacht Club. On 14 May it was announced that the Point Yacht Club had been formed and composed chiefly of Point residents.
With this knowledge, the club has organised a fun sail in the bay where they hope to get 125 boats on the water. Opening up the 125th Anniversary Race, the formalities on the water start with a colourful sail past at 10:30, thereafter boats of all shapes and sizes will be taking to a course around the bay before returning to land for the merriments.
Continuing with the bay series theme, the Anchorage Restaurant, headed up by the super-culinary wizard Chef Markus Banziger, will be offering flavourful Burgers and Bunnies, and to compliment this The Standeaven Craft brewery will be offering their liquid pride and joy. And if none of this is tickles your palate, the Anchorage Restaurant is open and the yacht club has a fully stocked bar offering a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options.
The festivities gets underway at 4pm. The entrance fee is R80 per person, which also gets you a free beer or cider. Parking is R20 for the evening, situated in the clubs safe parking area.
