Saturday 29 July
This performance by the Phumlani Mtiti Trio at The Jazzy Rainbow is part of the Concerts SA Venue Circuit which aims to foster a love and support for live music in our communities, as well as anchor small and medium sized venues in urban and rural Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.
Durban’s The Jazzy Rainbow, in association with Concerts SA, launched its first straight jazz programme on the eve of Heritage Day in September2016 and is following up with the same concept in 2017. “#JazzyStraightAhead is about introducing regular, live, straight jazz concerts to our city in order to help keep the music alive,” says Oliver-Rene Haas.
Phumlani Mtiti, originally from Port Elizabeth, is a young, up and coming saxophonist who now lives in Durban. He started playing saxophone at a young age and is studying at UKZN, fine tuning his craft. Through his participation in various initiatives, Phumlani has been privileged to attend many master classes and has also performed with many of our local jazz legends including Sibongile Khumalo, Gloria Bosman, Winston Mankunku Ngozi, Feya Faku and McCoy Mrubata.
The Phumlani Mtiti Trio has recently returned from a very successful stint at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. The trio is completed by bassist Dalisu Ndlazi and Zolani Rafuza on drums. They will be playing original compositions, which will also be featured on their forthcoming album.
