Durban is part of the topical global response honouring boy and men dancers, dubbed #BoysDanceToo sharing the strong message against bullying, mocking and teasing boys who wish to pursue their passion and dance. This campaign is in response to the snide remark about boy ballet dancers made on a USA morning TV talk show when presenter Lara Spencer teased Prince George about his ballet lessons.
There are many accomplished boy and men dancers, joining the girl and women dancers, on the KZN stages this spring: the glorious annual dance showcase Shall We Dance will take place in the Playhouse Opera from 6 – 15 September, and the Centre for Creative Arts (UKZN) and eThekwini Municipality is currently hosting the 21st JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience at various venues around the City of Durban until 8 September, and Brad and Ash Searle will perform in the vaudeville cabaret Bijou at the Hilton Arts Festival.
