Interview With Emily Mvune From Amanzimtoti High School

Emily Mvune, Captain of Amanzimtoti High School’s First X1 Hockey team, is eager to lead her team, the Durban South Regional champs, onto the astro in the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge that takes place at St Mary’s DSG, in Durban on July 20 and 21.
Emily is currently in Matric, and lives in eBhekulwandle, an outlying area in Amanzimtoti.
The dynamite defender, who began her hockey journey in Grade 4 at Warner Beach Primary says, “The thing I most enjoy about hockey is bonding and socializing with my team-mates. I also use it as my outlet, where I disconnect with the world and get my mind off Matric pressures too.”
Taking some life lessons from the field, Emily says that the best advice her coach has given to her and the team is “We can do anything we set our hearts and minds to.” “ Our coach Mr Clarke, often reminds us that we are not where we are by chance but because he believes in our abilities and that we are good enough to be in the team. That validation from him is always heartwarming and motivating.”
Emily, is not only a keen hockey player who has been awarded half colours, but she also plays soccer, for which she sports full honours.
Her favourite subject at school is history as she says that she finds it fascinating how the things of the past have affected the things of today. Although after completing school, Emily would like to pursue a career in technology and hopes to study Information Systems at UKZN or Wits.
Away from school she enjoys reading books, particularly African Literature and spending time with her friends and family.
Amanzimtoti High School joins nine other teams from KZN at the Grand finals including St Anne’s Diocesan Colleg, Kokstad College, Epworth School, Crawford La Lucia, Durban Girls’ College, , Ferrum High School, Wartburg Kirchdorf School, St Mary’s DSG, and Felixton College.
