Celebrate our culinary heritage at the
Durban Street Food Festival
@ The Pavilion Shopping Centre: 6 to 8 September 2024.
The Durban Street Food Festival – a weekend long celebration of our city’s diverse culinary heritage; craft and music – will be hosted at the Pavilion Shopping Centre from 6 to 8 September.
A variation of carefully chosen speciality food merchants will have stands at the festival selling a range of unusual globally-inspired urban food options to honour heritage month.
In the South African tradition, a shared meal is an essential part of celebrating our national heritage – people come together at a meal table. We celebrate the diversity of our national foods and unite over beer and brandy; konfyt and koeksisters; shisa nyama and chakalala; boerewors and biltong.
This year, there is a special focus on unique sweets and puddings – with freeze dried candy; build-your-own desserts; killer milk tarts; outrageous candy floss, colourful macaroons and a brownie bar. The festival also honours international culinary influences offering Portuguese inspired smash burgers; smoked meats from a Detroit-style smoke house; a range of Indian curries and spices, aromatic stir fries from Thailand and of course meals that are closer to home such as braais, boerie rolls, bunnies and burgers. There will be options for vegetarians and the health conscious.
Food and drink go hand in hand – the festival will offer a range of beverages hot and cold, adult and family friendly – from fabulous bespoke milkshakes to an elegant gin bar; well ground coffee, bubble tea and craft beer.
Complementing the great food will be a range of thrilling entertainment options, that will keep the young and old occupied for hours from the sip-and-paint; a mini-market with wares made by local crafters, designers and micro-entrepreneurs; kids’ activities, food options for young tummies and jumping castles; plus a daily silent disco for some fun exercise. The festivities do not end there, the long awaited rugby game (SA vs New Zealand) will be on the big screen on Saturday – encouraging everyone to bring their gees in support of the Springboks.
The festival will be jam packed with live bands. Highlights include the KZN Youth Orchestra; Veranda Panda, Wah Wah Baby, Easy Freak, Tristan Cole Boltman, Mike Makhosini, Freddy L, Tim Lewis and Matt Davies and the Rocc Lobsters. The live music will be followed by DJs to keep diners entertained throughout the evening.
“Come Hungry to feast, dance and enjoy time with friends and family,” urges event organiser, Georgios Kretsos.
Tickets can be purchased in advance through Quicket, or at the door on the day. The festival runs Friday 6 September 5pm until 10pm; Saturday 7 September 11am until 10pm and Sunday 11am until 8pm. Follow the event and The Pavilion Shopping Centre on social media platforms for more information.
