Durban celebrates Coronation of Charles lll.
Live Screening: Rhumbelow Theatre: Sat 6 May from 9am
Celebratory Service: St Cyprians: Sun 7 May at 9am
Coronation Celebration Concert: DLI Hall: Sun 21 May at 2pm
Community gatherings, street parties and bring and share picnics are the order of the day this weekend as Britain and the Commonwealth celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.
Magazines, websites and social media platforms are getting into the spirit of the weekend with a host of fun, easy, budget-friendly recipes. The Royal Household has also made some suggestions as to menu ideas – including a Coronation Quiche (nicknamed Quiche Le Reign) – a deep quiche with a crisp pastry case and delicate spinach, broad beans and tarragon filling and Cheddar, a nod to the cheesy eggs the king sometimes likes for breakfast!
Durban is celebrating with three events: over the Coronation weekend on Saturday 6 May, the Coronation will be streamed live on the big screen at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo from the build up around 9am for the duration of the ceremony at Westminster Abbey. Snacks will be on sale and there is a cash bar. Entry is free, however donations are welcome.
On Sunday 7 May, at St Cyprian’s Church, 603 Umbilo Road there will be a Celebratory Service for the coronation at 9am. The music will be led by St. Cyprian’s Director of Music, AJ Bethke on the organ together with trumpeter Russell Scott. The Durban Chamber Choir will lead the hymns. After the service there will be a picnic/bring and braai in the church grounds with a pipe band followed with live music by Dave Arnold.
The British Cultural and Heritage Association will present a Coronation Celebration Concert at the DLI Hall in Greyville on Sunday 21 May at 2pm, featuring the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, the Durban Symphonic Choir and special guests, under the baton of Russell Scott. The programme will feature some rousing traditional British musical classics interspersed with iconic British and more contemporary favourites
Seating is unreserved, there will be a cash bar, and tickets are R180 through Quicket.
This weekend at the Rhumbelow and at St Cyprians, picnics are welcome! Check out some of the recipe ideas on-line.
Long live the quiche.
Coronation Quiche Ingredients
The Coronation Quiche recipe, created by royal chef Mark Flanagan, serves six and requires one 20cm Flan Tin.
Ingredients for the Pastry: 125g plain flour, pinch of salt, 25g cold butter (diced), 25g lard, two tablespoons milk, or, to keep it simple, one x 250g block of ready-made shortcrust pastry.
Ingredients for the Filling: 125ml milk, 175ml double cream, two medium eggs, one tablespoon of fresh chopped tarragon, salt and pepper, 100g grated cheese, 180g cooked spinach lightly chopped, and 60g cooked broad beans or soya beans.
Coronation Quiche Method
Sieve the flour and salt into a bowl; add butter and lard rubbing the mixture together using your fingertips until you get a sandy, breadcrumb like texture.
Add the milk a little at a time and bring the ingredients together into a dough.
Cover and allow to rest in the fridge for 30-45 minutes.
Lightly flour the work surface and roll out the pastry to a circle a little larger than the top of the tin and approximately 5mm thick.
Line the tin with the pastry, taking care not to have any holes or the mixture could leak. Cover and rest for a further 30 minutes in the fridge.
Preheat the oven to 190°C.
Line the pastry case with greaseproof paper, add baking beans and bake blind for 15 minutes, before removing the greaseproof paper and baking beans.
Reduce the oven temperature to 160°C.
Beat together the milk, cream, eggs, herbs and seasoning.
Scatter half of the grated cheese in the blind-baked base, top with the chopped spinach and beans and herbs, then pour over the liquid mixture.
Gently give the mixture a delicate stir to ensure the filling is evenly dispersed being careful not to damage the pastry case.
Sprinkle over the remaining cheese. Place into the oven to bake for 20-25 minutes until set and lightly golden.
For all events, you are welcome to wear your blue, white and red!
