Boyley’s World

Hilton Arts Festival
Hilton College: 14 – 16 September
Recognising one of South Africa’s greatest landscape artists, the Hilton Arts Festival will be hosting a retrospective exhibition BOYLEY’S WORLD’ – THE ERROL BOYLEY CENTENARY EXHIBITION
The exhibition travels up from the Ramsgate Art and Books Festival to the walls of the Normand Dunn Art Gallery in the main Grindrod Theatre at the festival. This historic exhibition features a large body of work of Pietermaritzburg born Errol Boyley. Simply called Boyley’s World the exhibition recognises the year that he was born, 1918 – a century ago.
Boyley was a painter of landscapes, seascapes, figures, wildlife and still life, working passionately with oil. The self-taught painter studied for a period in the 40s at the then Natal Technical College.
His work is known for his astonishing use of light. Boyley’s varied and colourful career spanned almost 60 years – initially as a military man, then musician (an accomplished and professional guitarist. He won guitar lessons in a poker game!) before taking to painting and becoming one of the country’s most respected and accomplished painters. Boyley passed away in 2007.
Errol Boyley`s work can be found in collections worldwide, the Reserve Bank in Pretoria houses one of the largest with 15 pieces in all. Collectors are unanimous that Boyley`s images capture light in a way that outshines other artists.
The festival would not be possible without the generous support of Hilton College, Tiso Black Star, Grindrod Bank, Black Coffee Design, DWR Distribution, Bidvest Car Rental, KZN Dept of Arts & Culture, Assitej South Africa, Loud Crowd, Sappi, Redlands Hotel, BASA, Corona, and Capital Media.
