Instruments you have never seen before, African fabrics and safari suits, and a fusion sonic approach.
Bombshelter Beast is a genre-busting music collective second to none, comprising some of South Africa’s most colourful and innovative musicians – a line-up of instrumentalists that charm their audiences across the board.
It represents a unique approach to the South African sound – where you will experience a Jozi-mixed grill of old school Kwaito & House, Drum ‘n Bass, Dancehall, Dub, Ska, Balkan, Boeremusiek, Hip Hop, Ghoema, Rock, and the odd sneaky bit of Jazz – all peppered with badass rapping and live improvisations. The musical map is well worn out by this tuneful family and genres are blended together in a fresh, original sound that is best served hot.
A band like no other – think Black Cat White Cat meets Brenda Fassie – Bombshelter Beast charm their audiences across the board. It is nothing you have ever experienced before, and yet it is quite familiar: think of putting an Afrikaans opera singer, a Polish refugee playing the accordion, a UK-born kwaito star and South Africa’s most astute linguist rapping it up, and you have half the picture – the rest has to be experienced live!
Asked about the Durban leg of their Summer Roast Tour, bassist Romy Brauteseth says: “First up on December 16th there is a performance at possibly South Africa’s coolest club – The Chairman in Point. In fact the guys at this most stylish of venues have a surprise for all of us on the night – they are taking us down the road to an as yet undisclosed space, where the actual gig will take place! We know it is going to be a Beastly event, and we’re licking our lips in anticipation… Come on out Durban, this is a match for the ages – Bombshelter Beast & The Chairman!”
Sousaphone player Alex Hitzeroth continues: “Then on Sunday 17th December we are going down the road to the legendary Rainbow Restaurant in Pinetown to join in the celebration of their 36th birthday! Everyone who was or is somebody in the South African music scene has played The Rainbow, and Bombshelter cannot wait to jump up onto that stage and into history – what a Sunday afternoon this will be! Durbanites, if you cannot get to the Chairman gig, you simply must be at The Rainbow! We are going to have a Beastly birthday party.”
The Durban leg of Bombshelter Beast’s Summer Roast Tour is supported by Concerts SA through the Music Mobility Fund, a funding mechanism which offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music tours.
