iZulu Theatre – Sibaya Casino and Entertainment World
8 – 19 November
Thanks to countless requests from you, South Africa`s most successful musical revue ever returns to the iZulu Theatre at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment World from 8 – 19 November!
Launched in 1994 as a co-creation between Ian von Memerty and Bryan Schimmel A Handful of Keys has played to more the 420 000 people in over 1450 performances over the last 23 years!
Multiple awards, love letters from the critics and adulation from audiences have poured in for this “brilliant, hilarious and virtuoso celebration of the piano.” The show unravels as a constant surprise with devastating wit and musical mastery; from piano pyrotechnics to inspiring inventiveness – a two-hour fireworks display of excitement, energy and sheer, mind-blowing talent.
For the first time there will three keyboards and three pianists on the stage. “For our last performance of the 20th Anniversary tour in 2014, we had three pianists together and the show achieved a freshness and vitality that breathed new life into a show that was still enthralling audience.” says von Memerty.
Audiences can still expect highlights such as “The Complete History of The Broadway Musical in 12 Minutes”, Liberace, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Funeral for A Friend and the SA Medley but of course the opportunities to invent new material are tantalizing!
The virtuoso talents are Roelof Colyn, a Handful stalwart since 2001, beloved by audiences for his effortless charm, dead pan wit and the liquid magic of his playing.
He is joined by James Smith, aged 19, the youngest person to appear in A HANDFUL OF KEYS. As von Memerty says “It is a risk putting such a young person into a show as complicated and subtle as into the show, but I believe that James, with his unique mix of musicality, quirky humour and the beautiful timbre of his expressive voice, is up to the challenge”.
Plus this year, director Ian von Memerty, who has expanded and developed the show since 1997, has added a new and dazzling difference. This time around there will be an EXTRA HANDFUL on stage. A local piano prodigy from each destination will have a chance to feature – Ian is auditioning the best, the newest and wackiest piano talents around.
Don`t miss this ‘endlessly evergreen explosion of entertainment.’
