Hilton Arts Festival: Friday 13 September
Bookings are now open for the 2019 Jongosi Youth programme at the Hilton Arts Festival.
The full programme and all details are available on www.hiltonfestival.co.za . Jongosi takes place on the first day of the annual Hilton Arts Festival – 13 September this year – in the grounds of Hilton College in KZN.
Jongosi caters for learners in Grades 6 to 12 and productions are age and content appropriate.
It is an internationally recognised and documented fact that the youth’s exposure to and involvement in the arts results in happier, more productive and balanced adults who are in high demand in the job market. With this in mind, Jongosi aims: to introduce young people to quality theatre of all genres; to teach them that theatre entertains, educates and provokes discussion; to provide arts related activities / workshops between the shows they will be seeing; to make the youth of today, the audiences of tomorrow and the thinking leaders of the future.
There are strong themes running through this selection of work. Apart from those productions embodying the sheer joy of comedy and entertainment, themes of toxic masculinity, abuse of women, bullying, racism and the urgency to protect the environment prevail. It is a reflection of the issues facing the world, and especially the youth. As a result, people in the arts industry are creating shows around these topical issues. What you read about on social media you can see on stage at Jongosi. As always with theatre, these issues are often wrapped in heart-warming stories and humour.
The Hilton Arts Festival, now in its 27th year takes place from 13 to 15 September.
The full programme will appear in KZN copies of The Sunday Times on Sunday 11 August. Booking opens on 12 August, and the programme will be live on the festival website from the morning of 12 August.
