Shelfie Feature – Tanya van Niekerk

Starting off our ‘Shelfie Feature’ we meet Tanya van Niekerk. Moulding young minds, Tanya is an enthusiastic educator at St Dominics Newcastle teaching English and Science.
She states – I love reading, my family even has library cards! Newcastle’s library is amazing. At least the municipality got one thing right!
Balancing her passions, Tanya and her family are extremely active: trail running, gyming and swimming. She is also a world class umpire manager in the hockey world, and has been instrumental over the last few years running the Technical Desk at the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge.
Her Facebook profile reads ‘Passionate about education and empowerment. Family first ❤️ Make memories, don’t collect things.’
She does however collect books…
What do you love about reading?
What I love about reading is the fact that it is a mini vacation for my brain. It relaxes me and I sleep better if I read before bed. I have a Kindle but use it as a coaster. I love the smell and feel of real books, it gives me all the good feels.
What was your favourite book last year?
The best book that I recently read was Pretty Girls by Karen Slaughter. I love her books; she is not afraid to cover some difficult subjects and I become completely engrossed in her characters.
