uMhlanga Summer Festival, 2017
Sibaya Casino & Entertainment World: Sun 17 Dec
A revamped route awaits runners in the annual uMhlanga Trail Run, with the start and finish taking place at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment World on Sunday 17 December.
Three distances will be on offer to challenge participants. The longer, more testing 18km will include at least two river crossings, and the new route taking the runners straight onto the trails. The middle distance of 12km for the less hard-core trailers will also lead the athletes through at least one river, and then the shorter 5km race.
“The terrain predominantly consists of sugar cane paths and gravel roads with plenty of scenic vantage points. The two longer routes will definitely get the guys feet wet!” enthused uMhlanga Trail Run co-director, Buzz Bolton from Riverside Trails.
“This year sees the run completely beach free. In previous years the final testing stretch took you along the beach. And the long section of tar that led the runners out onto the trail is also gone,” added Vaughn Smit, co-director of the uMhlanga Trail Run.
Talking about the new route, Bolton shared, “After 18 runs starting and finishing along the promenade, we decided it was high time to freshen it up. Having previously taken the route near Sibaya, it made sense to move it up onto the hill and directly onto the trails.”
Defending champions in the 18km distance, trail running regular, the effervescent Eric Ngubane claimed top honours in the main event, while Amy Burger from Mtunzini was crowned as the leading lady. Ngubane holds the title of having won the most uMhlanga trail runs in the colourful 18 races held over the years.
The entry fees are R150 for the main 18km race, the middle distance of 12km is R130 and the fun 5km race is R80. Online entries close on 14 December. No entries will be taken on the day. There will be prize money up for grabs and loads of fabulous lucky draws on the day.
Race Registration takes place from 5am in the start area which is as you enter the main gates, to the right near the big function tent. The start time for the two longer distances sets off promptly at 6.00am. The shorter 5km fun race will get going five minutes after the more serious runners are through the start chute.
Sibaya Casino and Entertainment World will be supplying all the finishers with a welcome breakfast in the finish area.
