THEATRE

THE WITNESS HILTON  FLAGSHIP PRODUCTION
Nothing But The Truth
SUITABILITY: 13+
The Witness Hilton Arts Festival, by arrangement with the Baxter Theatre, presents John Kani's NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH

Written by and starring John Kani, a legendary presence in South African theatre circles for the past 30 years, the production is directed by Janice Honeyman, and also features the high-powered talent of two of South Africa’s leading actresses, popular television star Motshabi Tyelele, and admired KZN-born Welile Tembe. Décor and costume design is by Sarah Roberts and lighting design by Mannie Manim.
“A deeply felt portrait that delicately weaves the extraordinary and the ordinary in its characters' lives” (New York Times), Nothing But The Truth is a gripping investigation into the complex dynamic between those Black people who remained in South Africa and risked their lives to lead the struggle against apartheid, and those who returned victoriously after living in exile.
In New Brighton, South Africa, 63-year-old librarian Sipho Makhaya prepares for the return of the body of his brother Themba, recently deceased while in exile in London after gaining a reputation as a hero of the anti-apartheid movement. As the story progresses, the interaction between Sipho, his daughter Thando, and his London-based niece, Mandisa, leads to the uncovering of conflicting expectations as well as new-found perspectives, as each character forges a sense of reconciliation between the past and present.
The script combines powerfully dramatic writing with moments of humour and profound insight, affording audiences a theatre experience that stays in the memory long after the curtain comes down on each performance. The play proved the hit of the National Arts Festival when it played in Grahamstown, and has since garnered wide critical acclaim nationally and internationally.

Dream Of The Dog
SUITABILITY: 13 +
Set on a remote farm in KZN, this new South Africa play explores the terrible secrets that lie between Patricia, a sixty year old farmer’s wife, and Look Smart, a thirty year old land developer who grew up on the farm. Filled with extraordinary tension, revelation and dark humour, it challenges some of our deepest assumptions about ourselves and each other. It is in essence an intensely personal story set against the canvas of rural South African life two decades before.
Written & directed by Craig Higginson, based on the original direction  by Malcolm Purkey, it stars Vanessa Cook and Mncedisi Shabangu. It is presented by The Market Theatre.
Writer and Associate Director’s Note:
This play went through two rehearsed readings with Janet Suzman and Sello Maake ka-Ncube in London (directed by James Albrecht) and then other readings were held at the Market Theatre with Mncedisi Shabangu, Vanessa Cooke and Malcolm Purkey.
One of my intentions has been to write about the history of a country and its people in one scene, past, present and future. Another intention has been to ask us to stop cramming each other into the essentialist boxes we’ve inherited from Verwoerd. I am trying to find a language and a theatrical form appropriate to the complexities of our democracy and our barely-explored freedom. I am also asking us to confront the terrible thoughts and actions that have passed through all of us, not because we are defined by them but because, firstly, we seldom do, and, secondly, because they are not the only things we ought to be defined by. There is more to Patricia and Look Smart, you and me, than can ever be dreamed up in any political position or philosophy.

I, Claudia
I, Claudia is an internationally recognized, award winning one-woman play written by Canadian, Kristen Thomson, and  starring Susan Danford, it is directed by Lara Bye.  Unique masks, create by Melani-Rene Louwrens made the masks for "I, Claudia" with props and costumes by Jesse Kramer, sound design by James Webb and lighting is by Albert Snyman.
The main character, Claudia - an ‘official’ pre-teenager, is trembling on the cusp of adolescence: an irrepressibly funny misfit , suffering the triple afflictions of puberty, unpopularity and her parents’ divorce . Her mind is too bright and her clothes are too tight as she struggles to fit in. Her story is told through four wonderfully exaggerated comic characters: Claudia herself, her granddad, the caretaker of her school and her father’s new girlfriend.
The result is humorous, painful in its honesty and magical. The tale has universal appeal as we all have one thing in common –each and every one of us belongs to a family.
The text has won awards for the way it combines humour and pathos in addressing critical teen issues of identity, individuality, transformation, peer pressure, and parental issues of family relations and divorce.  It is  wise, life-affirming, funny and moving.
The Toronto Star claimed that the play is - "Blissfully funny and unexpectedly touching, a must see", while the National Post described it as “a masterful accomplishment” and went further to say, “Brilliant… charming and heartbreaking, but funny, funny, funny."

Living Here!
“Living Here!” is fresh, edgy and hard hitting poetry kaleidoscope by Ubom! Eastern Cape Drama company. Directed by Rhodes MA Graduate Brink Scholtz, “Living Here!” is a combination of African and South African poems, infused with  pop  music, physical theatre and clowning to create a work unlike anything you have ever seen. Here is a sensitive, honest and often brutal look at South African youth, and the challenges they face.
“Living Here” focuses on 'those' issues that no one wants to talk about, the ones that we manage to skilfully sweep under the carpet - issues of covert racism, fractured identities and assumed cultural superiority in the midst of a multi-cultural society.  It also considers the relationship that we hold with our problematic past, interrogating the value of continued engagement with a traumatic history.  While these issues are located within a specifically South African context and idiom, their significance resonates far beyond these borders, touching on complex issues of identity and history in contemporary multi-cultural societies.

The six talented performers, from diverse backgrounds create an explosive mix as they bring alive real, raw, relevant poetry, seasoned with a sprinkle of funky, popular tunes and some jivin’ and jammin’ dancing. “Living Here!” is an eclectic and dynamic fusion of physical theatre, hip hop dancing, mask work and contemporary clowning. Laughter and comedy act as catalysts for this explosive theatre event that will have the written word jumping off the page! “Living Here!” has a truly unique funky South African flavour  -  it dances, it shouts, it sings, and it wants to be heard.
“Living Here!” bursts with youth power, it stamps out the beat of defiant protest. This is theatre that packs a punch, theatre that means something to everyone and theatre that hopes to make a difference.  “Living Here” is powerful, provocative, and emotionally stirring theatre.

Master Class
Starring multi-award winning actress Clare Mortimer in the play's title role as the legendary opera star Maria Callas, this production of  Terrence McNally's Tony Award-winning play is directed by Ralph Lawson, who was awarded the Durban Theatre Award 2007 for Best Director.

Master Class offers audiences a rich theatrical experience, as Callas,  who died in 1977, is brought tempestuously back to life. The play is  inspired by master classes the great diva gave at the Juilliard   School of Music in New York towards the end of her career. The drama puts Callas at centre stage again as she coaxes, prods, and inspires  students (victims as she calls  them) into giving the performances of their lives while revealing her own.

Through a series of flash backs, we experience Callas's long-gone days as reigning Prima Donna at La Scala, her marriage to Meneghini, and  her great, doomed love for the Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle  Onassis. But the dazzling theatricality comes from Callas's emotional  exploration of her own cutting wit, and from the soaring music as each  student sings an aria that exposes La Divina's vulnerabilities and her  genius.

During the play's premiere season in the United State, The  Philadelphia Enquirer hailed the work as "a play of notable wit, humanity and insight."  The Wall Street Journal called the piece "McNally's best script so  far, sparkling, rich, mercurial", while The Los Angeles Times opined that "McNally's love letter succeeds brilliantly."
Mortimer is supported in this epic performance by acclaimed pianist, Andrew Warburton, and singers from the UKZN Opera School.

Kickstart presents David Mamet's  - a fascinating theatrical study fuelled with sexual tension that examines the notion of sexual harassment in a university environment.

Talking Heads
SUITABILITY:  15+
Written by ALAN BENNETT and starring FIONA RAMSAY – a Troupe Theatre Company production

South Africa’s leading actress has been seen at the Festival many times – you may remember her in the brilliant and moving BOOK CLUB, her dazzling tour de force in DECADENCE and her riveting versatility in TALKING HEADS. Well she is back with more of Alan Bennett’s fascinating characters from the many in his volumes TALKING HEADS I & II.

In TALKING HEADS Bennett whisks you off to his world of rather sad creations, but as you guffaw your way through the sheer brilliance of the lines - one is constantly aware that those people and their situation are filled with pathos.

This year Fiona plays the eccentric antique dealer Celia in THE HAND OF GOD – and if you are interested in antiques or watch the Antiques Roadshow – you’ll love this quirky tale of just some of the excitement and disappointment of bric a brac!! And Fiona reprises her touching interpretation of the Vicar’s dipsomaniac wife Susan in BED AMONG THE LENTILS.

Veteran actress VANESSA COOKE directs.

But the production is best summed up by a review from critic Barry Ronge from the Sunday Times:

"It is hard to imagine an actor rising to such a challenge with more wit and compassion than does Fiona Ramsay. Articulate and resourceful, she finds every joke and delicate shading in the text and makes it live. Standing alone on stage with minimal props, she works the magic of pure theatre, creating entire casts of characters and setting whole lives before us.”

By Dael Orlander Smith
Directed By Lara Bye

Stage Manager/Company Manager- Jonathan Keevy

Fresh from a tour of Holland, winner of the Kanna Best Production at the 2008 KKNK, Lara Bye’s production of the explosive American drama, - YELLOWMAN comes to KZN.
Racism is no longer black and white, but shades of brown as writer Dael Orlander Smith explores the tension between light and dark skinned African-Americans. She tells the heartbreaking story of childhood sweethearts- ‘yellaman’-Eugene and the big and dark- Alma.  Raised on too much liquor and too little love, they dream of escape and yearn for the adventure of new lives- travelling from the gin soaked blues of South Carolina cotton fields to the funk and soul of New York City.
With unforgettable performances by David Johnson and Mwenya Kabwe (winner of Best New Comer at the KKNK) YELLOWMAN is a uniquely powerful and mesmerizing theatre experience.  Described by critics the KKNK as –‘-mind blowing- a tour de force in staging and performance-’ and ‘pick of the festival’ YELLOWMAN is not to be missed.

Impisi
SUITABILITY: ALL
Created by Ellis Pearson and Clive Essame,   with script development assistance from Bheki Mkhwane.
Performed by Ellis Pearson and Sdumo Mtshali
Directed by Brian Pearce
A story about how society sees difference.
Impisi is the Zulu for hyena.  We, the two legged ones, have fixed ideas about this animal, describing it as an ugly, misshapen scavenger. We also have fixed ideas about the majestic king of the jungle. In this parable, Hyena helps Lion to take his rightful place in society, despite an accident which leaves him far from physically capable ...or so one would imagine.
Flavoured with the sights, sounds and images of the African plains, Impisi, performed by Ellis Pearson and Sdumo Mtshali, looks at how society views people who appear different, who may have a disability, but who take their place rightfully in society. It is, perhaps, those who judge and discriminate who truly disable people.
Impisi formed part of the Main Programme at the 2008 National Arts Festival and will tour the South of England early in 2009.

See Who’s At The Door
Mark Banks stars in his all new sketch comedy revue, specifically designed as a theatre presentation. “The Witness Hilton Arts Festival is an ideal venue for my mad-cap look at present day South Africa. Ideal for all ages!!!!” Hmmmm.... That's what he says - the festival organisers take no responsibility for this statement. However, to back this amazing claim, he is offering a full refund should there be the slightest profanity. The star of this comedy performance did not provide any further information on the performance other than answering the following questions:

What have you been doing since your last show?

Completing  my Pick 'n' Pay home executive cooking course diploma including flower-making out of soggy spaghetti. Test runs of the show in the Volkswagen wind tunnel in Windhoek and Robert Mugabe's guest suite at Tuynhuis. We were offered the abandoned Fidentia director's board room as rehearsal space, but felt it was too small.

South Africa in the 2000's - is there still enough material to work with, or was it easier before, in the dark days?

I think it's trickier now, because everybody picks the same target. With this show I have tried to get away from the obvious. The show changes daily, and that involves up-to-the-minute moving with the times.

You once said: "When I was born I was so ugly my mother was sent to prison for seven years.
I'm not a looker. It's from within that my beauty comes."

Do you still feel beautiful?

Er, umm ... yes. I still enjoy doing my work and shudder to think what I might have done had I been born as a government avenue squirrel with day blindness. Or the Moullie Point lighthouse foghorn tuner.

This work is cast in two contrasted movements, one of dramatic and impassioned searching and the other the most contemplative and otherworldly soundscapes that  finds a voice for the composer’s  most personal  thoughts and penetrative imagination, typical of the works from the composer’s final years.  Duigan is the recipient of several of South Africa's most prestigious awards and competitions  and currently maintains an enviable  performing schedule on  South Africa’s  premier concert stages.

CONCERT 13: TANGO DEL FUEGO PIAZZOLLA INSPIRED
Music Revival presents a extravaganza not to be missed; a concert performance performed by  Festival Tango Ensemble. This  six-piece ensemble features the leader of the renowned Cape Town Tango Ensemble and internationally recognised tango expert, Stanislav Anguelov (accordion). Anguelov is joined by James Grace (guitar), Christopher Duigan ( piano) plus Ralica Cherneva and Valentina Koleva (violins)  and Andreas Kappen (double bass). Their programme selection  focuses  on the ’ nueovo tango’ of  Argentinean Astor Piazzolla  who music has become a worldwide phenomenon on international stages in recent years.  Piazzolla’s musical style revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. Alternating gritty tango rhythms and harsh, angular melodic figures with slow sections that make  use of freely poetic lyrical solos allowing  strong expressive identity of  each individual musician, the style is both rugged and intricate, sensitive and demonic. Included are  several of Piazzolla's most widely acclaimed compositions; Adios Nonino, Milonga del ángel, Resurreción del ángel, Oblivion and Otono Porteno. Also included is traditional milonga and tango by  Carlos Gardel and  Julian Plaza. A  spectacular  musical event that will  not leave one un-affected.

Brutal Tunes
“Bobbert is brilliant, Stonier is first rate” - M Tarr
 “Wickedly funny” -  P  Leeman
The award winning, brutal revue is back, starring Lisa Bobbert and Anthony Stonier. Bristling with sharp wit and comedy and over flowing with musical ability, it is a music revue filled with comedy, clever (and brutal …!!) lyrics and outrageous fun. It is a macabre mixture of mystery, murder, mayhem and mirth.
Bobbert and Stonier will be accompanied on piano by the acclaimed Andrew Warburton, accomplished classical musician and more than capable of up staging them - after all, he has far more glamorous costumes - providing wonderful music, including an entire brutal concerto, despite the concerted attempts of the performers to derail him and, despite himself, adding enormously to the brutal atmosphere!
Directed by Caroline Smart, featuring music and lyrics by Sondheim, Noel Coward and Tom Lehrer among others, this delightful revue amuses and delights!

Hungry Tigers
Returning to Hilton after their sell out season in 2007! Hungry Tigers, made and performed by the Danish-English acting couple Mia Theil Have and Max Webster, is a comic delight. Throughout the performance they are a skilled mixture of human beings and cats, and, as the title suggests, are very hungry, fantasizing, between the musical numbers, about the food that they desire so much.
It is painfully funny and scarily musical as the pair change between guitars, saxophone, flute, percussion and piano – the last of which is played with toes, behind the back, and even with the noses as two clucking hens. It has real musicality, timing and humour.
Mia Theil Have and Max Webster have created a formidable cabaret with their Hungry Tigers – a musical portion of Whiskas for the laughing muscles, with a potpourri of both classical numbers and pop music, all bound together by two very hungry tigers.

Nibs Vd Spuy, Sa Guitar Legend In Concert
Nibs' spellbinding acoustic guitar style was first taken notice of, with his band, Landscape Prayers, performing live and on their four highly acclaimed Acoustic/Instrumental albums, between 1993 - 2003. His diversity as a songwriter, singer and finger stylist, reached a broader audience with the release of his solo albums; 'Lines on my face'(1999) and 'Flower in the rain'(2002). Both these acoustic gems were nominated in the best instrumental category at the South African Music Awards. Nibs's versatility to cross pollinate various musical styles, from, African, Classical, Celtic, World, Maskanda, Indian and folk can be fully appreciated on his first International release, 'Beautiful Feet'(2007). It has received rave reviews from from the London Guardian to the Sydney Herald, and in May 2007, was album of the month in 4 major German publications. This has been accompanied by intensive touring across the globe with a highlight being the prestigious East Coast Blues & Roots festival in Byron Bay, Australia. Here Nibs shared the stage with such luminaries as Ben Harper, Taj Mahal, Bonnie Raitt, Bela Fleck and Piers Faccini.
Besides his own solo career, Nibs got to record a beautiful duo album, 'Sweet-Thorn'(2004) with Mozambican, Gito Baloi and 'Hadeda'(2004) with drummer extraordinaire, Barry van Zyl, from Johnny Clegg's band. He has also got to perform and record with folk Legend, Shawn Phillips and Italian band, the Modena City Ramblers. Mostly touring as a soloist, Nibs also plays across the globe with his young virtuoso guitarist/multi instrumentalist friend Guy Buttery.  In  2008, Nibs has already toured South Africa and France with Piers Faccini and has just finished recording his International follow up to 'Beautiful Feet', 'A Bird in the Hand'. This will be released in September and promises to spread Nibs to larger audience around the world.
" Spare simplicity and the sheer radiance of his playing is done to heart rendering effect" -  Uncut Jan 2008

Robbin’ The Buble
In Robbin the Buble, Rory McLaren uses his magnificent voice to pay tribute to two of the greatest vocalists of this decade. "People have always likened my voice to that of Robbie Williams, and his song 'Angel' must be one of the most requested songs in my repertoire" says McLaren.

Other Robbie Williams favorourites such as Feel, Strong, Supreme, You're the One, Something Beautiful, Let Me Entertain You, Rock DJ and Better, are given the superlative McLaren treatment. Mac The Knife and Mr Bojangles from Williams’ Swing While You're Winning album are also included.

In contrast, the Buble selection has a sophistication and golden voiced tone which sets itself clearly apart - the beautifully modernized big-band and simplified rearrangements of songbook classics are stunningly performed by McLaren, who also takes a turn behind the piano.

Thus, "You'll Never Find", "For Once in My Life", "Put Your Head on My Shoulder", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "Summerwind", "Moondance", "The Way You Look Tonight", "Save the Last Dance For Me", "Fever", "Sway" and the immensely popular "Home" and "Feeling Good" are all included in the hour long tribute.
“While Williams veers between modern pop and standards (as on his Swing When You're Winning album) in his choice of material, Buble tends to concentrate on standards. So the programme that McLaren sings contains more of the big band swing type of number, given the current worldwide revival of interest in the genre.”  The Herald

BANDS
Plush
The future is coming / picking up speed” implores Rory Eliot, lead singer of Plush. It is a line in the middle of the fifth song off the band’s third and latest studio album, Rage On. It would be easy to miss, but for the resonating relevance. It explodes from the very heart of the album, an inspired eleven-track reflection on self-discovery, and succinctly sums up the state of one of South Africa’s most celebrated bands. On Friday 12 September 2008, Plush will play songs off their new album, songs off their previous albums as well as new songs making their debut for the first time. This is something for the whole family, acoustic rock at its finest.

CHURCH SERVICES

Evensong
The Sine Nomine Singers return to this year's Festival with their usual Choral Evensong in the Chapel.

The canticle settings are by the English 17th century composer, Thomas Tomkins, a fairly prolific composer of music for the Anglican Church.  In addition, the Introit, Anthem, Responses, and Psalm chant are by Tomkins, and this makes this service a unique opportunity to hear exactly what might have been sung on an evening at Worcester Cathedral during the composer's tenure there.  His setting of 'When David Heard', which the choir will sing as the anthem, is one of the great examples of Anglican choral writing from this time.

Tomkins was born in 1572.  By 1620 he had been appointed a member of the Chapel Royal, and later became Master of the Choristers and Organist at Worcester Cathedral.  He held the latter position until 1646, when Republican forces, in their Puritan fervour, dissolved the musical establishment there, and removed the organ.

Please join us for this service.  There will be well-known hymns for the congregation to sing.  Entrance is free, but there will be a retiring collection to defray expenses.

Normand Dunn Gallery
NORMAND DUNN RETROSPECTIVE
A retrospective of Normand Dunn’s work will be held at the Normand Dunn Art Gallery in the Centenary Building at Hilton College during the Natal Witness Festival. Dunn received his training at the Edinburgh College of Art and was represented in the Allied Artists’ War Exhibition in New Delhi in 1945.
Arriving in South Africa in 1947, Dunn set up the Art Department at Hilton College and during his some thirty years at the school the thriving art department gained a distinguished reputation. Dunn absorbed and documented his surroundings in South Africa with great love and passion using the bravado of technique and vital, strong colour of his native Scottish School.
He exhibited at local galleries in Natal. His work from this period can be found in the National Gallery in Cape Town. It was only upon his retirement that he was able to paint full-time from his home in Swellendam. During these years he exhibited widely and in particular at the Everard Read Gallery from where his work found its way in to many international collections.
Recently discovered paintings will be for sale on the exhibition and collectors of Dunn’s work would be well advised to come and see them. The exhibition runs from the 10th to 14th September and is particularly special as he was both a columnist and cartoonist for the, then, Natal Witness and a master of many talents at Hilton. The retrospective is the first of its kind to be held at Hilton.
