Vikram Hazra in Concert
Vikram Hazra doesn't just play music, he opens up a doorway for his audiences to touch their soul
Dbn: Olive Convention Centre: Sun 13 May at 4pm
Vikram Hazra - known internationally for his unique style of music, fusing ancient Sanskrit chants and secular wisdom with the sounds of the electric guitar to create a genre that transcends boundaries, uplifts the spirit and scintillates the audience – will be visiting Johannesburg and Durban in early May.
Vikram Hazra doesn't just play music; he opens up a doorway for his audiences to touch their own soul. "Our style of spiritual music involves sculpting sound in such a way that the listener hears the silence contained within," he says.
From the simplest of Indian folk bhajans (Indian devotional song) to the compositions of Adi Shankaracharya; from Buddhists chants to African and African-American spirituals; from the philosophy of poet-saints like Kabeer, Meera, Raidas and Jaydev to contemporary blues and jazz, Hazra's concerts seamlessly meld diverse styles into an organic whole.
Hazra is a writer, philosopher, media producer, and social activist. He is programme director for the International Art of Living Foundation, and in this capacity, he travels across the world, conducting workshops on personal excellence for corporates, and initiating community development and service projects that provide basic amenities like safe drinking water, health care and education to underprivileged communities.
For his Africa concerts, his band comprises: Vikram Hazra: Vocals, flute, electric guitar, nylon-string guitar and guitar synthesizer; Shivraj (Mizo) Doss: Electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards, arrangements and Ajay Kadam: Tablas, electronic percussion.

Dan Patlansky Live
Pumpkin Theatre @ La Montagne: Thurs 3 and Fri 4 May
In only a little over a decade on the music scene, Dan Patlansky has become one of the busiest and most respected blues artists to ever come out of South Africa. His music can best be described as vacillating between slick, soulful blues and the renegade psychedelic angst and raw emotion of Hendrix and Zeppelin – fire encased in ice...if you will.
Dan Patlansky shares the muse that touched Hendrix, Zeppelin and Stevie Ray Vaughan. What Dan Patlansky can do with a six-string Fender Stratocaster at the age of 30, most critically acclaimed guitarists will never quite achieve in a lifetime.
Dan Patlansky is a conglomerate of charisma, charm and musical genius - and all of this comes wrapped up in an unassuming, startlingly attractive package that bespeaks his Judeo-Spanish heritage. And yet, he doesn't seem to realise the extent of his tactile appeal – both on stage and in person. Humility suits him well and is as much an extension of his being as his Fender. There are no airs and graces here – just sincerity and an incredible musical talent.
Doors open 6.30pm – and show starts at 8pm. Bookings 032 946 2121. Menu options on request and website is http://www.pumpkintheatreclub.co.za
Connect the Dots for Climate Change
This Saturday, at events around the world, people will Connect the Dots between extreme weather and climate change. It's going to be an amazing day -- and the theme that will tie it all together is…the dots!
In Durban, Visual Artist and Feminist Theologian Dina Cormick will be doing a project at People's Park on Saturday afternoon between 3 - 5pm to help me make a very large mandala of a DOT!
"My plan is to use a `pointillist` method - invite everyone to put their dots inside the large circle. We will be using a sheet of material and paint. If you have a little jar of paint please bring, otherwise we do have paints and brushes. Hope you can make it!" says Cormick.
People's Park is that stretch of green behind the entrance to Moses Mabhida - you access the park from M12 (NMR/Broadway) it is the small road behind stadium, Plenty of parking.
There will be events happening around the globe. Participants are invited to take a photo of their "climate dot" which they'll make out of fabric or cardboard or anything else. Each of these dots will represent how climate change is already hitting home in our local communities. Some of them will have a climate message on them, some of them will have a symbol of local extreme weather, and some will just be a big, plain dot.
The global organisers are gathering a #ConnectTheDots Social Media Team to share key photos, facts and videos from our day of action :www.350.org/ctd-team

Durban Duck Day
Yacht Mole, Durban Harbour: Sunday 10 June
A 'quacker' of a day, the first ever Durban Duck Day takes place at Durban's Yacht Mole (off Victoria Embankment/Margaret Mngadi Avenue) on Sunday 10 June where a flock of 10,000 ducks will be released simultaneously to race, with the victorious duck winning the grand prize of up to R100,000.
Introducing a fabulous, fun family event for Durban that takes place in the new 'Fun Season' over May and June, with a day of non-stop entertainment with an obvious duck theme, be it duck dances for the younger participants, communal singing of specially adapted 'ducky' songs, or the quackier 'Best Duck Hat' or the 'Best Duck Costume' competitions. The colourful Duck Day 'Duckettes' will mingle in amongst the crowd to hand out spot prizes and giveaways.
Durban Duck Day is a really simple concept; a maximum of ten thousand numbered rubber bath ducks will be released at the same time to float on the tide, with wind and current assistance, towards a demarcated finish post. R10 from the sale of every duck goes into the prize pool, with the first duck to cross the finishing line winning up to R100,000 for the person that has 'bought' that duck.
The race venue will be carefully demarcated according to the tides and wind on the day, and will have pool-cleaning hoses keeping the ducks neatly in their corral. As the race progresses, the corral will be drawn towards the shore, containing the ducks for ease of removal once the race is over. Duck 'Wranglers' will be present at all times ensuring no ducks end up 'in the wild'.
Ducks are sold prior to the event. Schools and non-profit organisations can get involved by using this fun event as a fund raiser with a percentage of each bulk duck sale sold going to the selling school or organisation. Corporates can also purchase their own flock of ducks for employees or customers, and can take up a corporate hospitality area at the venue. Individual purchases of a single duck or a small flock can be made via the website below.

Natalie Rungan Pays Tribute to Whitney Houston, 'The Greatest Love of All'
uShaka Marine World on the Upper Deck 27 and 28 April.
Jazz and R&B vocalist, Natalie Rungan, will pay tribute to one of the greatest songstresses of all time – Whitney Houston – on April 27 and 28 on the Upper Deck at uShaka Marine World.
"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Whitney Houston. She will forever be remembered for her beauty, grace and amazing talent. In this tribute concert, I wish to remember her through the music I have grown to love. Together with Mark Royeppen (piano), Mazwakhe Gumede (bass), Bruce Baker (drums) and Linda Sikhakhane (saxophone) we have put together a programme which includes many of her great hits," explains the award winning local vocalist.
Rungan credits Whitney Houston as the super star that inspired her own career which has taken her from Africa to the United States, Scotland, Sweden and Australia where she has performed with a number of musical greats. She has recorded two solo albums – her debut Love is … in 2008 and now, Natalie – This Is Me.
Through this tribute show, Rungan echoes the words of the Houston hit 'I Will Always Love You'. "Whitney Houston was a super star. She made hit after hit. Her voice was just magical. She is probably the reason I started dreaming about being a singer. Like her, my influence in music started at an early age in church. I loved performing her songs. As I discovered my own singing talent, I learnt every note, every inflection and tried my best to do it how she did."
The two shows – on April 27 and 28 – cost R180 per person. This includes a buffet dinner from 6.30 pm with the show following at 8pm. For more information contact uShaka Marine World on 031 328 8000.
Le Devin du Village - returns
Durban Jewish Centre: Tues 1 May
Back by popular demand, this enchanting 18th century one-act opera is set to delight Durban music lovers next Tuesday.
Friends of Music have teamed up with Baroque 2000 to present Le devin du village, a delightful 18th century opera, next Tuesday 1 May, at the Jewish Centre, 44 K.E. Masinga Road (Old Fort Road), Durban @ 07:45pm.

It was first performed before the court at Fontainebleau on 18 October 1752 and at the Paris Opéra on 1 March 1753. King Louis XV loved the work so much that he offered Rousseau the great honour of a life pension. Rousseau refused the honour. However, the opera became one of the most popular of its day and brought him both wealth and fame. The opera was also performed at the wedding of the future Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
Le devin du village will be performed in concert by Lauren Dassapa (soprano), Warren Vernon-Driscoll (tenor) and Azola Mabutho (bass-baritone) with Baroque 2000 musicians under the leadership of Ralitza Cherneva. The production was first given by Baroque 2000 with support by the Embassy of Switzerland and the Rupert Music Foundation in March this year at Mariannhill and in Gauteng to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Rousseau in 1712.
Tickets at R60 (FOM members), R70 (non-members) and R20 (students) are available at the door and can also be booked though Computicket on 0861 915 8000. Safe parking is provided.

A Word to the ANC, in these times The Kairos SA Document & The Million Signature Campaigns
Diakonia: 26 April
The Kairos Document is a theological paper issued in 1985 by a group of concerned theologians. It is a Christian, biblical and theological comment on the political crisis taking place in South Africa at the time. This came out of a frustration that the horrors and the tyranny of the state of emergency which was being perpetrated in the name of Christ while the major Christian churches remained silent or responded with weak unprophetic statements.
It is a concise and respected critique of the then current theological models that determine the type of activities the church engages in to try and resolve the problems of the country and an attempt to develop an alternative biblical and theological model that will lead of forms of activity which will make a real difference to South Africa's future.
Perhaps what the Kairos Document did more effectively than any other church statement of the time was to de-legitimise the Apartheid regime in the eyes of Christians throughout the world.
And now, 27 years later, South Africa finds itself in the throes of a crisis of a different nature. The renewed interest in the Kairos Document has suddenly mushroomed in many church circles. A group of concerned Christians called Kairos SA have produced a second Kairos Document - 'A Word to the ANC, in these times' it is subtitled: "theological and ethical reflections on the 2012 Centenary Celebrations of the African National Congress".
The writers are hoping to collect a million signatures from South Africans of conscience in support of the document.

Diakonia Council of Churches - Good Friday Service
Durban Exhibition Centre: 5.15am - Friday 6 April
Diakonia Council of Churches, which for 36 years has been working for a transformed society, presents its annual ecumenical Good Friday service at dawn on Friday 6 April starting at the Durban Exhibition Centre (DEC) before processing – in silence – through the streets of Durban, to the City Hall.
The well-established tradition of the ecumenical Good Friday Service has become not only the flagship of Diakonia but also a major event in the calendar of the city, attended by thousands of people.
Each year, the service highlights a particular aspect of national suffering and injustice. The 27th service this year will focus on the need for new prophetic voices to speak truth courageously with love, as the God of justice does. The sermon will be preached by Revd Lauren Matthew, a minister of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa, who last year was appointed to the World Methodist Council as the youth representative.
It was in 1985 when the first Diakonia Good Friday service processed from the Central Methodist Church to the walls of Durban's Central Prison to pray for the treason trialists incarcerated there. Diakonia works for justice, human rights and reconciliation between all people, and with the troubled earth.
Meditative singing will start at 5.15am, where after the first part of the service will take place at 6.15am. The congregation will proceed through the streets of Durban in silent public witness.
The service will conclude approximately at8.15am at the City Hall with the flowering of the Cross –as an act of commitment by all present to listen deeply for and support new emerging prophetic voices.
Limited parking and street parking is available at the DEC with additional off street parking around the City Hall. Transport back to the DEC from the City Hall will be arranged for the elderly and the infirm.
Entry to the Good Friday service is free, with a collection being taken up during the service to support the burgeoning costs of this event. All are welcome to participate in this significant, multi-lingual Christian Easter event.
For more info, contact the Diakonia Council of Churches on 031 310 3500.

Abnormal Loads
Playhouse Drama Theatre - 16 – 31 March
Presented by Think Theatre in association with The Playhouse Company, this critically acclaimed work by Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner for Drama in 2011 is set in a fictional battlefield town in the once war ravaged valleys of Northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Described as a breath-taking amalgamation of ghost story, love drama, historical epic and dark comedy…a lyrical (at times bloody) praise-poem to the Province of KZN and its myriad of characters and cultures, the play takes an irreverent look at how history is misconstrued to suit the individual's needs, while offering a humorous reflection on the many contradictions and complexities of life in small town South Africa as events shift seamlessly from the grandeur of a battle-field in 1879 to the intimacy of the bedroom in 2011.
Designed and directed by Coppen with co-director Janna Ramos-Violante, and lighting by Tina le Roux, this multi-media production features some of the country's finest actors, including Allison Cassels, Mothusi Magano (of Totsi and Plein Street fame) and Jenna Dunster (Isidingo), with Fortunate Dhlomo, Ntombikayise Gasa, Nhlakanipho Manqele, Clinton Small, Thomie Holtzhausen and Nosipho Bophela.

Redh

KickstArt presents Red - a compelling and moving account of one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century whose struggle to accept his growing riches and praise become his ultimate undoing, which comes to the Playhouse Loft form 27 March until 1 April.
"There is only one thing I fear in life, my friend... One day the black will swallow the red."
This thrilling new play by John Logan (famous for screenplays for such films as Gladiator, The Aviator, Rango and the recent Scorsese blockbuster, Hugo) explores the fascinating creative process and inner conflict of famous American artist, Mark Rothko, who is painting a group of murals in his New York studio 1958-9, for the expensive and exclusive Four Seasons restaurant.

Jean Anouilh's - Antigone
Courtyard, DUT: 21 – 26 March
Lloyd O' Connor directs Jean Anouilh's Antigone – a robust Greek-inspired drama which explores the role of destiny in people's lives – for the Courtyard theatre at DUT to be staged from 21 – 26 March.
Written in 1942, when Nazi forces occupied France, the story revolves around the conflict between the idealist Antigone and her rigid uncle, Creon, over the proper burial of Antigone's brother, Polynices. The play was also interpreted to represent the struggle of the French Resistance movement against the forces of the Vichy government during the height of Nazi occupation.
Jean Anouilh's Antigone is an adaptation of Sophocles' tragic play of the same title.
Anouilh (1910–1987) was born in Bordeaux to a tailor father and a violinist mother. By the 1950s, Anouilh was Europe's most popular playwright. Throughout his career, Anouilh's drama featured biting political critique which faded later in life when his work became distinguished by their politically conservative nature and nostalgic tone. He wrote at a time when absurdist playwrights Ionesco and Beckett were changing the face of contemporary theatre.
This version, translated by Lewis Galantiére, is directed and designed by Lloyd O'Connor with lighting design by Tina Le Roux. O'Connor has created a production which is accessible for a contemporary audience by presenting it in colloquial text and using strong imagery. The design is very tactile and uses the elements, with a central sand pit, lit torches and a cleansing font. The cast comprises 1st, 2nd and 3rd year undergrad students. O'Connor is using sound scapes rather than an instrumental score – with sounds of waves, wind and water.
Date: Wednesday 21 – Monday 26 March, 2012
Venue: Courtyard Theatre
Time: 19h00
Director: Lloyd O'Connor
Entrance Fee: R20

Holy Trinity Catholic Church Musgrave Rd: Sun 18 March
A Sunday afternoon concert will consist of choral and instrumental works performed by the Durban Chamber Choir under the direction of Carol Stranex. They will perform the Requiem by Duruflé, Alleluia! Lobet den Heeren (Psalm 150) by Schütz and Litanies á la Vierge by Poulenc. The Requiem was commissioned in 1947 and written in memory of Duruflé's father. It is set in nine movements. The work will be accompanied by Dr Christopher Cockburn on the organ. It will be the first Durban performance of Psalm 150 by Schütz. In this performance, the choir and brass ensemble will be divided into two parts and placed on opposite sides of the church.
A brass ensemble drawn from the KZNPO will, in addition to accompanying the choir in several works, perform a number of classical and contemporary compositions. They will open the concert with a grand fanfare by Scheidt. In the second half, ensemble will perform two fugues by J S Bach, Adiemus by Jenkins and the Pavane by Ravel in the second half. The concert will conclude with the audience and all performers joining in the singing of Thine be the Glory. This promises to be a very varied and popular afternoon's entertainment.

Pieter-Dirk Uys presents - Adapt or Fly
Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre: until Sun 18 March Extra show Sunday 18 March at 7pm
Master satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys will be doing a world tour of South Africa with his latest show, Adapt or Fly, which comes to the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre on UKZN campus from 6 – 18 March.
Adapt or Fly! Mrs Evita Bezuidenhout, Kidi Amin, Pik Botha, Nowell Fine, Mrs Petersen, the old Krokodil, Madiba and the dancing DA are coming to the rescue! In a time of depression, recession, fear and anger, what is better and more healing than a good laugh at the expense of those who depress, recess, frighten and annoy us?
Pieter-Dirk Uys celebrates 2012 as a year of radical change in South Africa through political paralysis. From the hundred million rand ANC centenary celebration in January, right up that long winding road to end up again in Mangaung for the ANC December Congress, the ruling party will be too busy fighting each other for personal wealth and political power to bother themselves about running a country up or down.
Thirty years ago Uys started his total onslaught against careless, corrupt and unacceptable politics. Apartheid might officially be dead today, but the careless, corrupt and unacceptable political crooks and clowns are still dancing centre-stage.
His new show will be a personal political comedy-trek along a familiar long tiptoe to freedom, through the minefields of racism and sexism that have always made up the tarmac of our political freeway. Laughter at fear has always been Uys's trademark, from the darkness of his first one-man show in 1982 Adapt or Dye, to the dazzling kaleidoscope of rainbow colours in his new 2012 show Adapt or Fly.
Adapt or Fly was also inspired by politics. At the height of the Malema-speak of nationalization of mines and land-grabs of farms which frightened many people into near-panic, a spokesperson for the ANC Youth League was heard to suggest that if whites did not like the fact that the youth would take over South Africa, then they could go somewhere else: 'Adapt or fly!'

Zulu Crush
A novel by Roel Twijnstra
Zulu Crush is a much-anticipated first novel by Netherlands theatre director and writer, Roel Twijnstra, which is being launched in Durban at the Stable Theatre on Friday 9 March.
Vivid, personal and poignant, Zulu Crush, tells the story of a beautiful and complex love between an established Netherlands playwright and a much younger Zulu actress.
The overview on the book's cover tells us: "His friends warn him. They talk about the clash of cultures, about dreaming. They talk about gold-diggers and waking up. Nonsense, of course. The beautiful young actress Zandile is modern, independent and successful: she's the strong woman he never dared to dream about. The Dutch director, working on a play in South Africa, is falling in love. And Zandile loves him back. Their love is invincible. But there's something they both didn't count on: fate. Because you can't just have a crush on a Zulu girl, have her sit on your Dutch couch, and think everything is going to be alright,"
In Durban the book will be launched at the opening of the second Annual Phambili Youth Theatre Festival which takes place at the recently refurbished and newly equipped Stable Theatre. The festival runs from 9 to 11 March Phambili is presented by Stable Theatre in association with Twist Projects, and the launch will form part of the opening.

Umhlanga: 18 December
The marvellous new sport of trail running will challenge adventurers and runners alike attacking the trails surrounding Umhlanga in the Umhlanga MTN Summer Carnival's second Umhlanga 12km/18km Trail Run and Walk supported by Salomon which takes place on 18 December as the sun rises.
The second December holiday run, and fourth in the series of trail runs that have been run around Umhlanga and surrounds takes athletes on an invigorating 18km or 12km sunrise high-energy run. The race will have the more active tackling tar and off-roads, hills, wading through rivers, weaving through bush and sugar cane fields with the finish straight at the end of a short run along the beach.
The Umhlanga 12km/18km Trail Run and Walk invites the public to participate in this endurance sport. "The race isn't too technical and has a nice variety of terrain," enthusiastic race organiser, Buzz Bolton said.
The 18km route has enthusiasts starting at the Breakers Resort, taking them away from the sea up to the Umhlanga Ridge before descending towards the N2 crossing of the Uhlange River. The route then passes the Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom and then hugs the M4 near Umdloti. A bush trail takes runners down past Don's Hut and onto the beach. Defending champions in both the men and ladies event, Cato Ridge's Eric Ngubane and Durban North's Mandy Matthews will be back to defend their titles. Ngubane, a well known road athlete uses trail running to strengthen his ankles and legs. "Getting onto the roads is easy after trail running. I highly recommend using this off-road race as preparation for ultra marathons." A confident Ngubane stated.
Due to the gruelling nature of the race, the organisers have capped it at 250 athletes. Starting at 6am, the race leaves punctually from Breakers Resort. Prizes are up for grabs.

Royal Natal Yacht Club - 16 Year Old Solo Sailor stops off in Durban
Laura Dekker, the young 16 year old sailor, who stopped off in Durban over the weekend to wait out the weather on her mammoth circumnavigation around the world.
Pic by Sophie Thompson
Durban had an unexpected visitor this past weekend with Dutch solo Round the World sailor, 16 year old Laura Dekker, stopping off in port to wait out the bad weather that moved up the South African coast.
An exhausted Dekker arrived in Durban last week Friday after sailing for 47 days with her last stopover in Darwin, Australia. Smiling, she states, "I had an uninterrupted night's sleep which is unusual for my first night in port."
Dekker who is circumnavigating the globe in her 38ft Jeanneau Ginfizz ketch, fondly named Guppy began her voyage last year in August when she left her home country of Holland with the plan to become the youngest person to sail the globe single-handed. "I picked Guppy up incredibly cheap, she was a wreck. With a lot of help from my dad, we did her up to the magnificent ocean crossing vessel that she is today."
Her world has always been water orientated, "When I was five my Dad packed my family up and we set sail from Whangarei in New Zealand, where I was born. We sailed all the way to Holland on my father's boat. I believe that I am a doer and when I get an idea in my head, I usually strive to achieve it."
This is evident as the quietly confident Dekker sits on the deck of her immaculately kept monohull yacht. She briefly tells of her route that she has sailed to get to Durban, "I left Holland in late Summer, sailed past Canary Islands, across to the Caribbean and sailed along the eastern shores of South America, rounded the Galapagos Islands. I spent some time meandering around the Polynesian Islands which I just loved, every island was so different. The people, the culture were just amazing, that time holds a special place in my memories."
The young sailor is evidently in no rush, "I am just waiting for the bad weather to pass and then I will head down to Cape Town where I will stock up before tackling the final leg."
Her amazing feat is drawing to a close as she nears the last leg of her adventure but as she talks about what lies ahead, you understand that it is far from over. "I still have to navigate Guppy down to Cape Town along some of the most treacherous coastline in the world. I will have completed my circumnavigation when I arrive back in the Caribbean, but of course the Atlantic Ocean, 6,000 miles of it, needs to be crossed first."
"From the Caribbean I will make my way back to Whangarei in New Zealand where I hope to settle and maybe call home."
The journey for Dekker has by no means been any easy one, she has battled storms and high winds, sleep deprivation and blown out sails, "On the one leg I blew my Genoa and Main sail which was challenging as I limped to the next port so I could get up and running again."
But not a lot scares the small sun bronzed frame, and her passion for adventure drives her to extremes. Weeks alone at sea, she keeps herself busy with her home-schooling, reading novels and listening to a lot of music. "I also keep in touch with cruising yachts that are doing the same routes as me, I chat to them on the radio daily so I get to talk to other people while I am sailing."
Asked what she eats, she laughs, "I don't like fish or fishing. But I stock up in the ports with enough tinned food to last a long time. There is an art to making fresh food last, which I am getting the knack of." She has a large water tank on board where she stores her essential drinking water.
Having turned sweet sixteen in September, the brave Dekker is soon to enter the record books with her and Guppy's phenomenal Robinson Crusoe odyssey around the world and Durban was lucky enough to have her briefly in our port.
Royal Natal Yacht Club - Rupert Ellis Brown Dinghy Bay Series
Bay Racing: 19 and 26 November
The Royal Natal Yacht Club's Rupert Ellis Brown Dinghy Bay Series take place in the month of November with sailors in the smaller, more manoeuvrable crafts having four Saturdays set aside for racing that finishes on 26 November.
The age old series that is named after the former mayor of Durban is the only annual bay series that has sailors competing in a variety of races in the Durban harbour. The defending champion who raised the trophy in the 2010 series, Jay D'Engle has moved up to Pretoria to further his sailing career.
The event attracts a number of Lasers, Gypseys Mirrors, Terras, Oppies and Flying Fifteen crafts with young and old enjoying throwing themselves around in this highly physical sport. The Flying 15 class use the Rupert Ellis Brown Dinghy Bay Series as a warm up to the Flying Fifteens Provincial Championships that take place next month offshore of Durban.
Rear Commodore, Gregg Dobson, enthused, "We are halfway through the series having had a superb first day of sailing with race officer for the series, Graham Rose managing to fit in four races. South African sailor and Olympic hopeful, Durban North's Rudi MacNeil is leading the Lasers."
Glenwood sailor, Dobson has taken the rare opportunity to get out on the water and is showing his local knowledge of the Durban waters with an impressive second position behind MacNeil in the Lasers.
The duo of Miles White & Estelle Buys top the leader board in the Flying Fifteens after having just competed in the Cadet World Championships.
The second day of sailing was blown out due to excessive winds, Graham Rose stated, "We recorded gusts of 45 knots and with the incoming tide it created a severe chop in the area of the harbour where we were scheduled to race so in the interests of safety the afternoon's racing was postponed."
The third day of sailing was sailed in very wet conditions with Rose successfully completing another four races. The leader boards remained unchanged.
The annual Rupert Ellis Brown Dinghy Bay Series, the first dinghy regatta of the season, draws to an exciting close in the decidedly competitive small crafts series this November.

Royal Natal Yacht Club - Protea Cup
Offshore Racing: Sunday 27 November
Offshore racers gear up for the final keelboat race this year with the Royal Natal Yacht Club's Protea Cup that takes place on Sunday 27 November.
Depending on the winds, the intention is to have a 'There-and-Back' race that will have all competitors head up north where they will round the weather mark off Umdloti.
The race that is in its 84th year traditionally has the yachts make their way up north and is usually a fair bit longer than the more localised 'There and Back' races. The race will start off of Vetch's Beach and head up the relatively straight coastline, passing Virginia, La Lucia, Umhlanga Rocks, Umhlanga and the Hawaan Forest.
"Due to the race having a fair bit more miles to sail than normal, we will be setting the yachts off a bit earlier," Gregg Dobson, the Rear Commodore for the Royal Natal Yacht Club said. "We are hoping to get a big fleet as sailing up the coast this time of year is exquisite with the perfect weather for sailing along with whale spotting as they migrate south."
Two divisions will tackle the demanding 'There-and-Back' course, those of the racing and cruising classes. Defending champions are Nigel Miln on Skitzo in the racing and Commodore of the Royal Natal Yacht Club, Richard Crockett on Cavesham Caprice in the cruising, they will both be back to defend their titles.
As the temperatures rise with the Durban summer, yachties are taking to the waters for the upcoming Protea Cup hosted by the Royal Natal Yacht Club on Sunday 27 November.
For more info contact Chantal on 031 301 5425 at the RNYC office for the Notice Of Race and Entry Form, entry fee is R50 per boat.

Royal Natal Yacht Club - Wrap Up Report
Rupert Ellis Brown Dinghy Bay Series and Protea Cup Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November
A successful weekend of sailing saw boats of all shapes and sizes tackle two races, on Saturday the dinghies took to tranquil waters in the bay for the Rupert Ellis Brown Dinghy Bay Series and Sunday 10 keelboats battled a 25knot Beasterly Easterly and wild seas in the Protea Cup 'There-and-Back' race.
The final round of the Royal Natal Yacht Club's Rupert Ellis Brown Dinghy Bay Series concluded with 30 dinghies sailing a windward-leeward course set by race officer, Graham Rose. The small crafts completed four races in the deep water area of the harbour in a pleasant 6-10 knot breeze.
Preparing for the upcoming Flying Fifteen Provincials, a good fleet enjoyed the welcome practice. Estelle Buys paired up with Gareth Elias for the final leg of the series and lead on Saturday's leader board streaking ahead of the competition. But the duo of Patrick Harris and Jeremy Kriek topped the overall log with 18 points after their consistent sailing over the three race days. They were followed by Craig Campbell and Ian Hogg on 32 points, claiming second position and the bronze went to Clinton Henry and Patricia Kilburn with 35 points.
The highly competitive Laser class had 14 boats on the water participating on the final day, with the Rear Commodore Gregg Dobson finishing on 23 points walking away with overall honours. Dobson had some tough competition, including Alexander Campbell who has recently been competing in the New Zealand National Laser Championships in Torbay and Rudi MacNeil who is currently competing in the ISAF World Champs in Perth with the hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Olympics. Campbell was the runner up with 34 points and MacNeil being awarded third position finishing on 51 points.
The Rupert Ellis Brown was competed over four Saturdays in November. The first and last Saturdays had the agile crafts sailing in superb conditions with a number of junior sailors jumping on brightly coloured Terras and Dabchicks to enjoy the sunshine. The second Saturday was blown out with winds gusting to around 45knots and the third race being sailed in extremely wet conditions.
The Protea Cup 'There-and-Back' race recorded 17 entries but heavy sea conditions had only ten yachts bravely cross the start line. The gorgeous racing craft, BMA skippered by Alec Lanham-Love set the pace enroute to the marker off Umdhloti, followed by Sticky Fingers with Rob Samways at the helm and Gregg Hurter on Flying Spaghetti Monster.
The cruising class sailed towards Umhlanga with skipper Vernon Goss on Bellisima leading the fleet consisting of four boats. Goss took an early lead keeping his nose in front on the windward leeward course. He was followed by Phil Downing on his yacht, Inside Out and Christo Howell on Sovereign. Errol Rutherford sailing on Sundance finished in fourth.
Gregg Dobson commented after the race, "The sea became a little steep especially sailing past the river mouths. Nearly all the boats took water over the decks and we sailed in winds in excess of 30knots." Smiling he continued, "The sleigh ride home was exhilarating to say the least. A couple of broaches, some shredded kites and a spectacular Chinese Gybe by Monster reminded everyone of the skills needed to drive boats downwind, surfing at speeds of around 20knots."
The Royal Natal Yacht Club looks forward to the long weekend with loads on the go for all of the water boys and girls with the Flying Fifteen Provincial Championships, the 'Xmas' Regatta and a number of their sailors competing in the HMYC Hunter Provincials.

Royal Natal Yacht Club - Flying Fifteen KZN Provincials
Durban: 16 – 18 December
It was a weekend where the defending champions all kept their titles safely in tact at both the Flying
Fifteen Provincial Championships hosted by Royal Natal Yacht Club and the Hunters Provincials hosted by Henley Midmar Yacht Club.
Down in Durban ten Flying Fifteens took to the water in magnificent sailing conditions offshore and in the bay for the Provincial Championships. A total of ten races were sailed over the long weekend with Jeremy Kriek and Patrick Harris dominating the proceedings.
On Friday, Race Officer Jimmy Melville managed to get in four races offshore in a light North Easterly breeze with all the races being a Windward Leeward course. Saturday saw the competitors tackle an Olympic Triangle course with another four races being sailed in a moderate North Easterly. The final day saw Melville opt for a Windward Leeward course in the harbour due to the conditions that picked up.
Kriek and Harris exerted their authority in the Flying Fifteen class and managed to walk away with eight firsts and two seconds and were delighted with their success. Harris from Hillcrest claimed, "It was great to be out on the water and have the opportunity to sail offshore. Jeremy and I loved the conditions and stuck to our tactics which served us well. It was wonderful to see the amount of guys sailing in the provincials and we were extremely happy that we were able to stay on top of the leader board."
Up at Midmar Dam the Hunters Provincials had brothers, Luke and Stephen Wagner show their prowess in the Hunters sailing class. Two teams from the Royal Natal Yacht Club travelled up to Midmar to compete.
A total of twelve races were completed over the three days with an extremely strong fleet competing. Most races the time between the first boat and the last boat crossing the finishing line was on average ten minutes. Sixteen teams from around the country travelled to the blissful setting.
The Rear Commodore for the Royal Natal Yacht Club joined forces with Rob Samways and they worked hard gaining a fourth position overall. Umhlanga sailor, Chris Frost paired up with Ballito's Gareth Elias walked away with a well deserved fifth. Frost stated, "It is the third time in four years that I have sailed a Hunter, so I am very pleased with our overall efforts. It was a fantastic event, and we managed to get the full quota of races in and always wonderful to be out on the water."

Royal Natal Yacht Club - SAS KZN Provincials Sprog and Halcat Nationals
27 – 30 December: Henley Midmar Yacht Club
Four days of stunning sailing conditions saw 72 boats on the water taking part in the combined SAS KZN Provincials and Sprog and Halcat Nationals held at Midmar Dam from 27 to 30 December.
The event attracted top contenders as they jostled positions in the large fleet, including the Robinson family sailing in the Sprogs under the Royal Natal Yacht Club burgee and UK based Andrew Tarboton who has just competed in the ISAF World Champs in Perth competing in the Laser class
The Sprogs had 20 boats competing in the class and the race officer managed to get in 15 races over the competition, which allowed for three discards. The Robinson brother and sister team of Ricky and Kath dominated the class with four firsts and four seconds; they started and ended the regatta in top spot. Ricky is the current reigning L26; Mirror and adding to the list, the 2011 Sprog champion.
The Halcats had a fleet of 19 bright colourful sails in their class, sailing a total of 14 races with two discards. Roger Hill from Trichardtsfontein Dam near Secunda, was the outright winner with an impressive ten firsts and two seconds. His next rival was Royal Natal Yacht Club's Steve Hegerstrom from Hillcrest, followed by Gareth Elias from Ballito.
The Lasers had a fleet of 27, the fast paced dinghies managed to get in 15 races over the four days, giving them three discards. Professional sailor, Andrew Tarboton from Morningside took line honours. Tarboton notched up eight firsts and three thirds putting him on top of the log in front of G Caroline and Patrick Harris.
The class has a busy year ahead with the upcoming 2012 Laser Nationals taking place offshore of Durban in April.
Laser competitor and Rear Commodore for the Royal Natal Yacht Club, Gregg Dobson said, "It is very promising to see that we had so many young sailors out on the water at Midmar. Five of the top ten entries in the Sprog class comprised of family units."
The Sprog is a high performance two person racing dinghy and is a proudly South African designed boat and the Halcat is a small two person catamaran with a trapeze, both boats don't have a spinnaker. Lasers are a one person Olympic class racing dinghy.

Umhlanga 12km/18km Trail Run and Walk
Umhlanga: Sunday 18 December
The defending champions claimed victory in the second Umhlanga MTN Summer Carnival's 12km / 18km Trail Run and Walk with Eric Ngubane and Mandy Matthews regaining their titles in the growing sport of trail running.
Ngubane paced himself well, at the first water point he was tucked behind Sandile Lembathe as the duo charged through the 8km mark with only 43minutes on the clock. Peter Sehlope was a few paces off the front runners but had them safely in sight. As they turned around the corner after the water table, they were greeted with a mountainous climb for the next four kilometres.
"The toughest part for me was from the first table to Sibaya, we hard to work a lot harder around the ten kilometre mark, using a lot more mental strength." stated a tired Ngubane. "I knew the route from having run this event a couple of times now but somehow the hills took a lot more out of me."
Ngubane, a well recognised road runner uses the sport of trail running to strengthen his body, "it is a thinking race, and constantly you are concentrating where to put your feet as the terrain changes all the time. We ran on tar roads, through sugarcane fields, the Hawaan Forest, gravel roads and the final killer 2km stretch on the beach. The changing environment just makes for a more exciting race."
Ngubane took a narrow lead at the halfway mark and hung onto it for the remainder of the race. "The final river crossing was challenging, the depth was about chest high in places and I took the quicker refreshing option of swimming."
"Running on the sand was extremely hard. The gap I had created widened a bit as Sandile battled wading through the river. I relished the sight of the finish line."
Completing the 18km in a shattering 1.16.05, Ngubane had close to two minutes on the second place runner, Sandile Lembathe as he took a wrong turn in the forest but finished with a respectable time of 1.17.56. Sehlope battled in the last 5kilometers but managed to cross the line in bronze position. Sehlope and Lembathe both specialise in the shorter distances and were elated at their mornings efforts.
Local lass, Mandy Matthews lead from the start in the small field of brave women who elected to run the 18km. She was delighted with her race, "Wow, I just loved it, loved it, loved it! This is my second time running this event and everything was just perfect. I found the hills through the sugarcane to be challenging, and the soft beach sand to be extremely difficult but the beautiful scenery throughout was utterly rewarding. The section where you hugged the M4 and had 180degree views of Umhlanga and the ocean were just magnificent."
Matthews has been running off road for a few years now, escaping at every available opportunity with her husband, Marc, to attack the trails.
A field of 280 hardcore adventurous runners, almost double the amount that lined up at the previous year's start, took to the gruelling course on a sweltering Sunday morning. Competitors had the choice of the 12km or 18km but both offered runners and walkers two river crossings and a variety of terrain.
Race Organiser, Buzz Bolton was delighted with the outcome, "We lengthened the route by an extra 2kilometers and have had great feedback from the guys as they came across some new interesting obstacles. I am overwhelmed with the response that we had, we wanted to cap the race at 250 people but were flooded with entries from around the country and accommodated as many as possible. This event is creating a name for itself in running circles as more and more people are falling in love with this kind of race."
Marketing Manager of race sponsors, Salomon, Jackie Moore said, "Being able to get off the roads and onto the trails is awesome and certainly is stunning running through these parts of the north coast! The guys appreciated that the race wasn't too technical and had a nice variety of terrain."
Peter Rose, chairman of the Umhlanga Tourism raved about the event, "I can't think of a better setting for this kind of event. We have so much to offer runners with a variety of terrain that they can traverse and experience."
The next race will be held over Easter on Monday 9 April, for more details on entering contact Buzz Bolton on buzzhilde@vodamail.co.za

Quays Whole Food Night Market
The Quays – Browns Rd, Point Development - Thursday 2 Feb: 5pm – 10pm
The fabulous Quays Market will be celebrating its first market of the year on the edge of the canal in the Point Development area on Thursday, 2 February from 5pm until 10pm.
It is nearly Valentine's Day, so the market will be awash with all things romantic, red and schmoozey.
The Whole Food Market takes place in the huge function room, outdoor picnic area and mezzanine sun-downer deck at The Quays which is part of the new Point Road development project.
This proactive initiative continues the vision of Glenwood Community Forum member and market convenor Darryl Hofmann to offer a series of inspired gourmet-events in interesting places.
Hofmann has carefully chosen stall holders which will create a deli-vibe – allowing visitors to purchase produce from the stalls, and assemble a meal, indoor picnic style. Included in the stallholders mix is organic meats; honey on tap; organic pizzas; artisan breads; fresh olives; marinated feta cheese; fresh herbs; and fresh fruit and veg.
Again, there will be plenty to taste, as well as boutique wines, cocktails, salon beers and beer from micro-breweries. To add ambiance to the evening will be live festive music.
There is ample parking – alongside the Quays, at the Durban Underwater Club and nearby uShaka, and there will be additional security personnel on duty. To find The Quays – take the second left after uShaka at Wodka, and go over the canal bridge as though going to Durban Underwater Club. Night Market will be on your right.

NLDTF/PANSA Festival of Reading of New Writing: 2012
CAPE TOWN / JOHANNESBURG / DURBAN
PANSA is delighted to announce the fifth PANSA Festival of Reading of New Writing with the generous support of the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) to be held in April 2012.
The aims of the Festival are to generate original South African theatre works, to provide a platform for these works to reach the attention of theatre producers, and to work towards full-scale productions of the winning plays. As the busy festive season is upon us, the deadline for entries has been extended from the original in December 2011 to Friday January 13, 2012.
The winning scripts in each region are re-read in the national final and are up for a Grand Prize of R30 000.
The scripts should be entered in one of the following categories: Comedy, Drama, 1 / 2 Hander. A panel of judges will select the five best scripts for participation in each regional Festival. Each of the selected scripts will be given a basic subsidy to fund reading rehearsals and S&T as required. The Festival will be open to writers throughout South Africa.
The basic criteria for participation are:
• All PANSA paid-up members may submit for free
• Non-PANSA paid up members will incur a R200 entry fee
• the work must be an original work
• the play must not have been published or performed before
• PANSA would have first option on producing and publishing the play (selected works may be published in a collection)
• plays should be between 70 minutes and 90 minutes long to ensure the possibility of a full-scale professional production
• there should be a maximum of 8 actors
• English should be the primary language of the play
An important component of the Festival of Reading of New Writing will be the discussions to follow the reading of each work, to encourage constructive feedback, and the debate around theatre aesthetics, functions and forms.
Scripts must be typed, loose-leaf and have all pages numbered. Please include a cover page with all contact details and title of the play. Submissions must be sent to PANSA National Office at Postnet Suite 126, Private Bag X18, Rondebosch, 7701, Cape Town by FRIDAY JANUARY 13, 2012. Hand written submissions and those that arrive after the submission date, will not be accepted. Writers will be notified of the outcomes by the end of February 2012.
